In Yahtzee's latest ZP of Super Paper Mario he mentioned his opinion of JRPG's (that they suck) and his two exceptions. I'm just wondering if what the others here think.

Disagree? Agree? If the latter, do you feel there are any exceptions or that they all suck?

I find it amusing that he used Suikoden III as his example of sucky JRPGs because that was a pretty good game. But then I realized that it was Suikoden V which I haven't played and not III, so I'unno.

I don't think there's really a solid case to dismiss JRPGs unless you're just not into that sort of things. Some of the best games I know of are RPGs from Japan. Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy Tactics, Cave Story, um, Chrono Trigger...

I've said before that Paper Mario and Earthbound are the only good jRPG franchises, so it warmed my heart to know that I'm not the only one who thinks this. (Note that when I say Paper Mario, I mean Mario RPG, too.)

Also, FF6, Chrono Trigger, and... That's it, really. I've heard Final Fantasy Tactics is good, but I can never fucking find a copy for a decent price.

I also really like FF7, but I feel like a faggot every time I play it because of the fanbase :<

And I've heard Disgaea is supposed to be really really great, but it's by Atlus and they have a track record of terrible games with idiotic and adoring fanbases. Probably the same people who praise the Tales series and FF9 to no fucking end.

I've just gotta tack Chrono Cross onto the list so far. Branching storyline, visible, avoidable enemies (So you only have to fight when the story demands it.) multiple endings, and an amazing soundtrack.

Yeah, but the "Save game" option is a joke - you can't stop playing it even for a little while without forgetting what happened, where you are and what you're supposed to do.

Secret of Mana - A bit better than Chrono Trigger, and pretty much the pinnacle of Square's achievements, in my book.

Hmm, dunno, tried it with an emulator but I found the story a bit (euphemism) childish. Also I didn't like that clumsy battle system, but to each his own, I guess.

Only J-RPG I can think of that I actually enjoyed playing (when I was like 14-15) was FF6 (and perhaps 8, because of its passion and the incredible visual experience which was great for its time, though I couldn't bear with that emo fucktard Squall anymore).

*Falls down dead at the idea of a grownup argument*

I never got into 8. Couldn't get my noodle round junctioning and the like.

Ok, guess I could've used the expression "completely unoriginal and uninteresting" as well, but I didn't want to pick a fight. Didn't play it too long, though, got bored after I recruited the first party member, so there's a chance that I missed a great story with brilliant twists and turns. But if any game/film/book/whatever fails to get me interested from the first second, that's usually not the case.

Yeah, the Junction system in FF8 is a bit of a brainfuck, I didn't like it much either. But I could bear with that.

If you don't like Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore is a great alternative. It's lightheartedly humorous, has a fantastic soundtrack, and the combat system is infinitely more refined than Mana.

Also it doesn't suck horribly the same way Mana does which is a plus

Tried that one too, seemed more interesting, but I had no idea where to go at one point and the maps were huge and confusing. Got tired of it. Nah, J-RPGs are not really my thing.

Ok yeah, Evermore is almost as bad as Marathon Infinity in not telling you what the fuck you're supposed to be doing or where you should go about doing that thing it won't tell you.

I like it, though.

I can't really give a non-biased answer on this, because I've never really like it in the first place. I mean, I probably would have gotten more into them, had I not seen one of those gay Kingdom Hearts commercials, which basically set my opinion of them in stone. Yeah, they suck. I find text-based combat more exciting than turn based. Plus whenever I played a JRPG it just seemed so... gay. I'm not some FPS junkie of something, it just wasn't my kind of thing.
