So, what's everyone's beef with this guy? He was the butt of several jokes in Angular Mike, but I don't get it. I was reading on Wikipedia about him, and I don't see what's so bad about about him--the other Beatles respected him, he has a distinct drumming style, and he narrated Thomas the Bleeding Tank Engine. The only mark against him is that he didn't have a successful solo career in the UK like the other Beatles did. And Octopus' Garden, which I think he sang, is one of my favorite Beatles songs. What makes Ringo a joke?

I think it may be because he's not a great drummer. However, none of the Beatles were great instrumentalists (apart from Paul).

George Carlin also narrated Thomas The Tank Engine!

I used to fucking loathe Ringo. I still hate the songs he wrote with the Beatles, but I don't think I'd give him a dirty look on the street. I'm more neutral toward him.
He plays drums!

Ringo is better than a competant drummer. His musicianship is underrated, IMHO. And he did have a decent solo career with many hits. I've kind of thought less of him over the years also, but have grown to appreciate his talent. I haven't bought any of his music off itunes as I have John, but since the wifey gave me an itunes card maybe I will now.

And his music is pretty upbeat. I wanted to download some Aimee Mann or Joe Jackson the other night, but when you look up the lyrics, they're just so depressing. Songs are nice, but just Negative.

Ringo IS a living legend.

Interviewer to Lennon:"Is Ringo the best drummer in the world?"
Lennon:"No, he's not even the best drummer in the band."

Not sure whether this is neccesarily true, but it made me chuckle.

Ringo was heartbroken, listening to the White Album tracks where Paul did the drumming in his own sessions. I feel for the guy.

Lennon had a biting wit, and was quick to throw it into any situation. But John also wrote some of Ringo's solo songs, and they continued to get along and play on occasion.

So it's a funny comment. But the fact that they worked together shows that Lennon at least thought that much of Richard Starkey.

Thanks. Your comments helped me develop a persona for Ringo as I prepared a costume as him for a Halloween party. I'd post a picture, but the gallery's borked.

Ringo deserves mass respect.
While other drummers played like Quaalude Thunder as the 60's wore on (Bonham, Baker, Carmine Appice, etc) he was laying down tasteful beats that fit the song. You could change 'em but it wouldn't necessarily be an improvement.
plus who could hate songs like 'with a little help from my friends' and 'don't pass me by'.
i'm not familiar with his solo output... he played on several of the beatles early solo albums.

Gea'! (gear)
i hung it on me wall.

No one who owns Abbey Road thinks Ringo is a shit drummer.
What exactly are people expecting? He's in time with the music... Beatles songs don't exactly require a dave lombardo type presence. But seriously the 'golden slumbers/carry that weight' trilogy that goes into a drum solo at one point is fucking awsome.

Ringo is great. Octopusses garden is a loverly song.
