And floppy makes his triumphal return, only to be banned seconds later for posting warez.

Where's Hecc? I know that he was a big user on OiNK. I wonder what he thinks about all this.

The two most recent articles sum up my take on the whole thing.

On a more humorous note, however, the BBC aired a report on it that was so amazingly misinformed that it's quite hilarious. They made it seem like some bizarre cult.

Yeah, you're pretty much right. Not worried here, I was a very small-time downloader. The media sure is making a big deal of it. I agree completely with what you said in your blog, Hecc.

I wasn't necessarily just speaking opinion. Those are the basic facts. The same sentiments are popping up elsewhere as well.
The industry is going to have to learn one way or another. They can either embrace the technology, and find a way to benefit from it, or they can watch the sales of CDs decline gradually for years until the whole system collapses on itself.
It sounds lame, but we really are on the cusp of a revolution of sorts, I think. The music industry is in dire need of a complete overhaul, and I think it's only a matter of time before it finally kicks in that they should be embracing the file-sharing community that they've been trying to fight this whole time. I think it's more or less been proven by now that we're stronger than them. Not just in numbers, but in integrity. This isn't the first time they've toppled a giant, and it won't be the last, but we keep coming back with bigger sites and better ways to get the music. I don't think this will be any different. Hell, in all of this, the only part of my life that's changed is that I'm using Soulseek more than I have in years.

Also, I just noticed this, but how was floppydisk posting warez?
1) Torrents aren't warez.
2) Oink was shut down. There was nothing there.
3) I didn't even know that people still used the term "warez". Does that make me 'out of the loop'?

If you think about it, this is a bit like the movie industry's initial reaction to the VCR: dressing it up as "the Boston Strangler" and who knows what. Eventually, though, they'll come around. wink.gif

I'm not so sure. Explaining things like DRM-free MP3 files to a record industry exec is like pulling teeth. They don't understand that if someone wants to distribute MP3s to other people, they're going to find a way no matter what. Encrypting the actual CDs with copy protection didn't work, and people have found ways to remove DRM encoding from files downloaded from stores like iTunes.
Until someone takes the reins away from the uninformed maniacs who are running the established recording industry, I don't think we'll see anything like OiNK's Pink Palace operating legally anytime soon. It would be nice, of course, but it just doesn't seem likely.

And yeah, I caught that it was a joke, floppydisk. I wasn't being all that serious myself. smile.gif

In my philosophy class, this guy gave an oral report on warez, pronouncing it "wa-res". I think the message he was trying to conveys is that warez are okay if you buy the ones you like, or something. I didn't like that class very much.
