Okay. I think I'm going to get a hell of a lot of flack for this. But anyone that actually knows me knows that I am about the least racist person in the world.

HOWEVER: All of this hype surrounding the "Jena Six" is really starting to bother me. No one's really looking at all of the big picture here. This article sums it up well: http://msn.foxsports...r/story/7170510

Yes, I'm against racism. No, I don't think they should get murder charges. But the fact is, SIX tough, strong dudes ganged up on one guy, beating him even after he was unconscious on the floor. They could have killed him. And it was pretty much unrelated to the noose incident (until they got the idea to make it related, causing a media uproar). This white kid had nothing to do with that, as far as anyone knows. But everyone's all like, "Dude, nooses from the 'white tree' and then the black kids are getting charged for something they did wrong!" And then want the group of 6 to get off completely scot-free??? I don't think so.

So many people are following the media craze to support the Jena Six in a way that I don't think is fair. Anyone have any thoughts, here?

Only thoughts I have is that racism is retarded, and that adding it to this equation just complicates things (which is probably what the Jena Six anticipated, and / or wanted) so that they could get off of the charges no problem, somehow -- or maybe they did it because they're mindless jocks, or for come kind of statement, I don't know.

They deserve to be charged attempted murder, at least. That beating was far from a "schoolyard fight". I read about this story months ago, and it bothered me then as much as it still bothers me today. The fact that people hung nooses, or even spray paint swastikas on churches and what-not disgusts me. People need to grow up. Stuff like this isn't funny.

Blargh, thanks LttS.

And yay, someone finally agrees with me! No one wants to listen to the facts, it seems.

Sometimes it doesn't matter what the facts are
the words that pop out at peopleand the simple fact
is that the Jena Six were only acting on the hate
that was displayed with the nooses.

Perhaps they were probably frustrated
that the "noose hangers" were only suspened
and could've been looking for a fight.
Things are different in the States especially
in the South and stuff like this happens.
Yes, racism is stupid, but it shouldn't be an excuse

The nooses were prettty extreme still the
teens had no rigtht to beat that "white kid" to a bloody pulp.
I think theres alot more going on b/c to me it doesn't add up
Why the one kid would be singled out ?

Because earlier, a black kid got beaten up at a party that he showed up to uninvited, and later at school this white kid was cracking on the black kid for getting beat up.

oh okay
it makes sense why they would be angry, yet the punishment doesn't fit the crime.
As for the teens facing attempted murder charges it could be tough court process.
Who instigated the fight, and who did the amounts of damage?

There was a bullying tragedy that took place in my community near
ten years ago where a group of teens, 2 girls and 1 boy, drowned a
classmate while several others watch and cheered them on.

It was difficult to identify what exactly happened from the many
witness accounts but the main 3 were single out.
2 of them made plee agreements and received lighter sentencing.

which is probably the best case senario for the Jena 6.
This was also a racial issuse but it was purely
cut and dry b/c the victim did nothing 'wrong'

If they do decide to charge all 6 to the
full extent of the law there will be an outcry.
Even if the noose thing was a separate incident,

they were tied together for the obvious reason
to make them look lie the true victims.
i really don't think this wil end well

I dig what you're saying Spoon. Racism sucks, but so does violence. If it were six white guys who had done the beating, the case would have been over before it began.

Beating someone because they're racist is like trying to heal a cut using an assault rifle: it doesn't make any sense and it's guaranteed to make things worse however you look at it. In the end, probably unjustified and illegal.

Do people want them to get off Scot free? I heard people just thought the attempted murder rap was ridiculous. I don't know, I wasn't there, but if six dudes can't kill an unconscious dude when they were apparently trying, then yeah, their parents need to teach them a lesson or two. It'c called a work ethic, kids: when we were your age we finished what we started!

Well, that's what I take "Free Jena Six" to mean, although I guess it's possible they mean free on bail, but bail seems like kind of small thing to get all excited about.

September 20th was the day people were supposed to wear black to support the Jena Six, and there was actually a protest here about it. It was kind of funny to one day have a bunch of screaming militant college students protesting the taser incident, and the next day have some soft-voiced black women in their place.

Yeah. I think that the charges are already reasonable. What they did was attempted murder- and while the provocation was bad, so is beating someone to death. Maybe they deserve a lighter sentence, but totally dropping all charges is ridiculous.

That's seriously what a lot of people (at least college students, the hype's all over Facebook) want.

I do agree that the white kids that did a similar thing previously should have gotten MUCH heavier sentences, but just because they were unjustly sentenced too lightly doesn't mean others should, too.

Kicking someone till they're unconscious isn't a civil right, it's a crime. Even black people have to follow the law. Keep em jailed. It'll do society good.
