Took the initiative meaning, of course, giving lots of money to the people researching them. I think Gore funded a lot of DARPAnet, but I'm not sure.

Yeah, exactly Slade. Running an election is just like interviewing for a job, but instead of an HR guy, you're advertising and hyping your resume to a constituency. And we all know we embelish our resumes, yes?

Look, there's only so much coal/oil left in the world. Lets just party and burn it all off now because running out and loosing electricity and transportation are an inevitability. When we go back to medieval living we can beat up all the assholes who wasted the last of our resources by driving everywhere out of laziness and thinking they were too good for public transport and thusly contributed to poor traffic conditions which wasted even more of our remaining supply.

But most importantly, when that day comes and it will be no longer possible to listen to heavy metal in any way that dude with the nobel peace prize will be remembered by a bunch of very angry metal heads as the guy who tried to ban it all together in the 80s.

geez... why won't I let that go?
He was on futurama...

Don't worry, barend! There's always the possibility the corporations will lighten up and focus on positive solutions to dwindling fossil fuels such as alternative energy instead of maximizing profits for as long a term as possible!

Global warming as a manmade change is crap. I don't know a geologist or climatologist that agrees with it. Do I care what a flipflopping boor who was happy to play second fiddle to Clinton thinks about a scientific issue?

Seriously though, global warming (as caused by emissions) is a subject in scientific debate. Not a fact. If it is disproved, will Gore's award be taken away?

As for inventing the internet- DARPA also put fireflies in jars and sent them to Viet Nam to detect people underground. Why isn't Gore claiming involvement in any of DARPA's other research?

Haha, I wouldn't get into the global warming thing, if I were you, Cyzyk. Everyone will hate you if you try to argue against it.

(However, since I share your views in some ways, I can highly recommend the Crichton book, State of Fear. It uses actual facts to be educational, and is a good read, too. It's amazing how people will latch onto some things and believe them no matter what the evidence to the contrary is.)

Cyzyk or Spoon, can you show me a resource that says global warming hasn't been proven? And I mean something that says global warming is disputed and weighs both sides of the issue, not something that outright claims it's a hoax.

EDIT: I guess that was a stupid question. http://en.wikipedia....ing_controversy

I don't have time to read it right now, but it's the first source I've seen that acknowledges a lack of consensus, rather than just dismissing the other side as bunk. Or at least appears to be. I mean, "There are questions regarding the proportion of scientists who agree or disagree on the existence of human-caused warming." How much more vague can you get? It's like they're saying it they don't know how disputed it is, if indeed it is disputed.

If I hadn't lent my book to someone, I'd be able to give you a SHITload of sources - Crichton really did his research when he wrote his book. There are just about as many places in the world that the temperature has gone down as where it has gone up; some glaciers are receding - not advancing; some glaciers are gaining ice instead of melting; also, no one thinks about how data from several years ago was likely to not be all that accurate, as they didn't exactly have the best technology and stuff.
I was a pretty hardcore Man Is Eating the Environment defender until I read that book, I really recommend it - it's a pretty good story, too, so it's not like you'll be bored reading it.

Spoon, you're more open-minded than I ever suspected. I'm glad I gave the debate club another chance. No sarcasm intended. smile.gif

Oddly enough, Spoon, my views on GW are influenced by Crichton as well, although not by that book.

Here's one of his speeches on it:

Crichton Speech on GW

There's more stuff on the website, mostly quite readable.

And thanks for the link Cyzyk, that's some good stuff.

I also openly enjoy RPGS (paper and electronic), theology, and writing anti-drug ads, so be careful.
