I plugged this game in the Fullyramblomatic Forums, but I feel I should post it here too. The Way's website lacks a decent introduction, so I will attempt to give it one here. Basically, The Way is to RPGMaker as Galaxy of Fantabulous Wonderment is to AGS. (Be sure to write that analogy down, kids, in case it comes up on a standardized test.)

Here's a little info on the brillant storyline: The Way is set in a linear world surrounded by mist on both sides of the line. The mist moves as time progresses, engulfing everything that doesn't move, yet constraining people from getting too far ahead. And here, in this world of people forced to spend their lives wandering, we find a man scouring The Way in search of his lost girlfriend, with no guidance except his tenacious determination to not rest until he is united with her again. And here I don't even know what tenacious means.

The character development system is quite a gem: to highlight the main characters loneliness as he continues on his quest, you the player are only capable of developing his character and attacks; whoever might happen to journey with you must look after himself. Rather than the traditional system of kill stuff -> get stronger and buy better equipment -> kill more stuff, the methods of improving your character are entirely different. Rather than getting into technical detail, let's just say it's pretty fun.

Other fun tidbits about The Way:
1. It's free.
2. There's a character named Slade. (Unfortunately, the best hotlinkable picture I can find is fanart)

Helpful Hint: Never try to write a video game review after going 36 hours without sleep. I apologize for being incoherent.

Hmm... A character named Slade, eh? Sounds suspicious... That fan art is not me, nor any characters that may share the name that could be concocted by me (and no, I wouldn't be doing any Gary Stu stuff were I to make a Slade). I shall check this out.

It seems to be interesting, but I am absolutely embarrassed for this game by the fact that the battle music for Episode 1 is the frickin' Castlevania 1 theme song/first level song. Also RPG maker style battles and sounds kinda suck. Just let me plunge all day, please. tongue.gif

I started playing it for a bit; it seems okay so far but I'm rolling my eyes at the terms. "The Plunge," "The Purpose..." I think he could come up with better. Still a good way to unwind though, especially since my brand new P.O.S. computer (it wouldn't be if the motherboard they sent wasn't shit) can actually handle it. Haven't gotten very far though.
I am writing about Jm in my signature because apparently it's an effective method of ignoring him.

Downloading all the parts now, that's quite the interesting premise you've put forward there.

No room in your heart for anyone but Squall, eh, David?

I was really tired when I wrote that the whole thing might not be 100% accurate. Allow me to put forth the disclaimer that the game doesn't really pick up until Episode 2, because Episode 1 is mostly introduction and training.

I agree with Slade that the battles are a let-down at first, especially in Episode 1, where you have less of a say in how your character fights, plus there seems to be an issue with certain monsters taking too friggin' long to kill. (Not to mention all the plunges you have to lose...) It gets better later in the game when you have access to different "weapons" and skillsets, though. (All the innovation and the minigames is why I made the comparison to GFW.)

Spoon: I was going to say earlier (but forgot) that the game reminds me of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series (not to say that I've read the story since 5th grade) because of all the different factions in power and the simplistic names. But the game just wouldn't be the same without The Plunge.

I'm quite liking this. I've just finished Part 5 (of 6) and it's coming together quite nicely. The game has some flaws.
1. The protagonist spends quite a bit of time being a dick. I for one quite like Kloe, but he insists on insulting her at nearly every opportunity.
2. Some of the mini-games (cannon game, I'm looking at you!) are ridiculously unplayable. Sure, they're optional, but they give neat stat bonuses.
3. They have a huge array of different attack styles (piercing, slashing, fire, air etc) as well as a large array of different 'armour' types, but then give you no way of determining what the enemy actually attacks with/is strong against, making it rather moot.
4. Some of the plot points, such as selective amnesia and getting interrupted just before you get the information is rather tiring.
But I'm loving the large cast of well developed characters, each with their own motives, alliances and drives. It all seems to be drawing towards a close now, so let's hope that the end doesn't disappoint.

He's the biggest bitch of 'em all. Although I did like that game, even if there was the whiny angsty teenager fucktard protagonist, because I felt that the visuals, the other characters and the plot excused his stupid quirks. Only time you may see Squall in my posts is when I use him as an emote, such as this one (NOT TARGETED AT ANYONE IN PARTICULAR AT THE MOMENT, BEFORE THE BANHAMMER STRIKES):

In this game I don't see any such redeeming qualities. The gameplay feels too much like woodcutting, the battle system is seriously stuck up in its own ass, getting seriously maimed and beaten up by absolutely everyone all the time makes the guy's badass "Oh-how-much-more-than-thee-have-I-experienced" attitude ridiculous, chipset configuration is screwed up, and nothing really happened before I lost my interest in the whole thing. Sure, I can believe that the story kicks in at the 2nd or 3rd episode, but I'm not wading through an ocean of poo-pile to see that.

Am I the only one who doesn't have a problem with an angsty protagonist?

Unless it's Vivi, of course. Fuck that kid.

That ain't the main problem (though it is a factor), the main problem is that this one fails to keep my interest. And at least Squall was at least a bad mofo when it came to whooping ass, the only ass-whooping this guy sees (up until the point I've gotten fed up with this game) is his own.

I'm personally tired of teh angsty, apathetic antagonist. This is why I fell in love with stupid stuff like G Gundam and Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann. Was sick of the post Evangelion mecha scene. A protagnoist doesn't have to be a total badass or anything, I just wish he'd stop crying and a) fly the robot, cool.gif save the world, or c) fly the robot. It's become cliche for a protagonist to hate life, in agmes, movies or anime.
