I would be able to forgive Half Life for controlling like a butt if I gave a tin shit about the story, but I really don't.

When it makes sense it's presented really well, though. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy your akward first person platforming and constantly falling to your death courtesy of Valve's SLIP N' SLIDE Physics Engine.™

It's so easy to criticize a video game's physics engine 9 fucking years after it was made. But if you played that when it came out you would have crèmed in your pants, all french-like.

Mabye, but there were waaaaaaay more enjoyable shooters out at the same time as Half Life, and some that were even out before it. See also: Goldeneye 64, Duke 3D, Marathon 2.

Well, Duke3d wasn't that great.

Actually, Saucy is part right on HL1, it's a big fat pain in the butt to play that game nowaday. Sure, it was awesome back when it was released, it was for most the first experience of aiming with the mouse for FPS, and it was also the game that pulled the plots of action games on PC out of the blackhole of crappiness. But since then there's been tons of FPS and action games that took where HL1 lefts it off and pushed the genre forward to the point where every aspects of HL1 were remade in a way that makes HL1 looks like crap. Gordon's boots seems to be permanently covered with grease, more than half of the levels layout is Star Trek on steroid consisting only of pipe bridges, ducts, piston chambers, and staircase of rubbles you need to jump on just to reach the next area, everyone of you reloaded the game 20 times minimum just to achieve that jump through an elevator cage to grab the last step of the ladder on the other side and story wise there's now better. Yes, it might have been good back in the days but it's a big fat pain in the butt to play nowaday.

The same pain in the butt Doom, Wolfenstein 3D and Goldeneye became the first time you experienced the bloody goodness of aiming with the mouse with HL1 and enjoyed a serious plot instead of "A portal opened between hell and the moon LOL!" cheesy plot of Doom and the average crap plot of that time. From the moment you played HL1, you knew there was no turning back, and Doom became something that was more satisfying to remember than replay. The same thing happened with HL1, it's now a pioneer, nothing more.

Heck, to take an AGS example, Rob Blanc was once considered one of the best game in the AGS scene since making a good game with AGS was an exploit back in 2000. But face it, you don't play that game anymore because compared to today's AGS games, Rob Blanc seems to come from a camel's butt.

Where Saucy is wrong however is about AI. I'm sorry but it doesn't degrade the experience and it's not like AIs made significant improvements since then, I read reviews of monsters walking in straight line to you and not even trying to dodge the bullets in Doom 3. And your experience with marines unable to shoot while running doesn't beat all of these moments that will be forever carved in my mind where these bastards threw grenades in the holes I was camping in.

Half Life was fun. Full stop. Without waxing nostalgia over the whole thing, I can say without hesitation that it was the first shooter I actually enjoyed, rarely does this happen. It had a simple yet compelling storyline with an atmosphere that many contemporary games still find hard to recreate. It was revolutionary for it's day.

You don't have to like it, but hating the game outright it is just plain stupid.

On topic: I found the Halo series pretty average.

Earthbound bugs me. I don't dislike it, it's just another one of those things that I don't think is too great.

Frankly, I think the battle system sucks. But still.

Meh, whatever.

Shall we carry on being cheery little forumites now?

Spann you were acting like a tosser on the back of a bus aching for a fight by playing loud music out of a phone.

Professor Saucy, you had a legitimate argumet, but it was wrong, and anime is also as overatted as halo, but thats more of a statement than a knock at you.

However this thread is now about smiling, so I must refrain from badness. smile.gif

The only animes I enjoy are the big tough manly ones like Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D.

Also, I guess you missed where I showed that my avatar is Kumatora from Mother 3. Because it is!
