I dont really know how to explain or state this topic. but basically, these would be games that are pretty much responsible for keeping a company financially afloat,..avoiding going defunct,.games that saved or prolonged a console's lifespan while the successor to the console was still being developed.

some examples are:

Donkey Kong Country (SNES): a game that is the collaborative work of Nintendo & Rare that breathed new life into the SNES, as new 32 bit systems were in development by Sega, Sony, etc.

Final Fantasy (NES). Squaresoft's "final" work before they would declare bankruptcy, to their surprise the game is a hit, and spawn many, many sequels

Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis): as the popularity of Nintendo's Mario character grew, Sega found themselves without a character, until they came up with Sonic the Hedgehog, and it gave Sega's Genesis console a boosted competitive edge against the SNES/

If you can think of some more examples..please list them

If you're going to count that, the 64's joystick was a large reason it stayed afloat against the playstation.

The original Playstation being a pile of ass might have also had something to do with it.

You'd think so, but everybody loved them some Sony for a long long while. I never once understood it, and still don't.

OP: They were still just "Square" at that time, I think. Then they turned into Squaresoft, then later Square Enix.

Square has always been Square (or Square Co.) SquareSoft was a branding they used, notably as part of their North American release division. Enix absorbed Square in 2003. Which is a shame... everything taht was good about Enix turned to steaming crap. Valkyrie Profile, I weep for thee.

And regardless of the actual console, there were many memorable games on the PS. It's both a curse of Sony's almost laissez-faire attitude to 3rd party design. Let em do what they want and eventually someone will make something good out of the pile of garbage. I think it's biting them in the ass at the moment, as they're losing what were formerly platform exclusives. There's no contracts as to who publishes what on what console so might as well jump ship to who has the bigger install base. That's why we're seeing XBox and Nintendo releases of RE and MGS and so on. But back on topic, the original Playstation just had some fun titles, easy controls (compared to Saturn/Dreamcast and N64 at the time), and a wide install base due to pricing. Plus it was cheap to develop for.

Which I would say that as a console saver, the Playstation's Dual Shock was innovative at the time. It was familiar, had rumble built in, had dual analogs, and ushered in the PS2.

The dualshock was the opposite of innovative in my opinion. The button layout was based off the SNES controller, the joysticks were their attempt to catch up with the N64's innovative controller, and the inbuilt rumble was merely the way things were headed after Nintendo's rumble pack. I'm not saying it was a bad controller, it's tried and true, but it was a composite of widely available ideas.

Innovation would be Nintendo putting a joystick on a controller. That took everybody by surprise. Same with the motion sensor on the Wii. Now, I know Microsoft made a motion sensitive game pad nearly a decade ago, but there was never any support for it. Nintendo picked up the idea and used it to turn around their game design.

So yes, the Dual shock controller did save the PSX, but not because it was innovative, but rather because it brought the console up to date with Nintendo's innovation.

Online Console Content

More I can't think of.

...I had a Sega controller with a joystick... Before N64 came out... Does that not count?
I am writing about Jm in my signature because apparently it's an effective method of ignoring him.

I think you're absolutely right about the Dual Shock being an amalgam of design, but it was more easily adopted than other controllers and at the time included them without any extraneous pieces. Plus, it's ergonomic design allowed players to reach both sticks without changing positions as the N64 controller was designed to do. Fortunately more producers began to break away from the NES pad design at that point and accepted what was in the dual shock as standard. IT's good to see with the Wii Remote that someone can even push away from that design (after the gamecube design even).

Question, what was Nintendo's initial online content?

That would've been a digital stick, so no.

It was called Satellaview.

http://en.wikipedia....iki/Satellaview

But disregard that, because it turns out I'm wrong. Intellivision were doing it in the mid eighties and sega did it in '94.

Thus, you may consider this argument ruined.

No, I'm saying I didn't like the Playstation because it caused the trend of casual gaming with shit like Gran Turismo and Tekken. Aaaaaaand because it suffered from ridiculous technical problems, but it's mostly the first reason.

Granted, there were some fucking great games for the system (Um Jammer Lammy, Guilty Gear series, Symphony, etc.), but I think I'm programmed to hate it because I grew up with the N64.
