what a fine time the fifth generation of console was. one of the best i would have to say. playstation and nintendo 64. while many may say that the 32 bit playstation seemed to be the clear overall winner of this era, you cant deny just how damned fun the n64 was,..and still is.

some of the best games for this system were undoubtedly produced by nintendo and rare. there were a few gems also made by midway too.

i love the n64, the last of the catridge-based consoles (save for handhelds). this n64 was quite a durable system, you could drop it, bang it, toss it,.all within accidental reasonable degree, and the damn thing will still play like a charm...which makes it an excellent system for young and old alike.

i actually own about 4 of these consoles...yes,..four of them. im the type of collector, that, if i see a used system cheap,.i will buy it. if i recall correctly, i bought my first for about $19.99 at a pawn shop in 2001., then subsequent consoles for about $5.00 each,.at various places.

with the system now retired from store shelves,.im finding out that this is the perfect time to acquire some great titles to add to my collection. i recently obtained Donkey Kong 64,.as many of you may recall, this title was priced new at $70.00 and came with an expansion pak. i bought mine for only $7.00,.one 10th of the price...patience is a glorious thing.

i remember the general public was baffled at the complexity of the controller, which it really isnt complex at all,.but at the time, it drew much speculation..especially the four C buttons. it actually turned out to be an awesome controller.

what i liked about the system also, was that the bulky portion of the ac adapter was designed to be inserted directly into the console..rather than having this huge black chunky box hanging off of your electrical outlet...the super nes adapter was huge enough.

some will say that the graphics and visuals on a lot of the n64 games look blurry,and that the camera angles are bad. the system was harder to program for than the playstation..but the 3d environments..when done right..could submerge your imagination right into the heat of the action.

it is a great system..and i only wish that more games could have been made for it.

Mario Party 1,2, and 3.
Midway Games Somethingorother

One game I really wanted to get was a game called Hybrid Heaven. The game's story wasn't that great, but I loved the gameplay and RPG elements it had -- it was the coolest thing ever.
The battle system was something I've never seen before too, where it was like a fighting game, but at various moments you could pause it and assign actions to different body parts -- then afterwards your limbs would gain levels and get new abilities (like a different punch for your arms, or a different kick for your legs), it was EXCELLENT.

The Zelda games for 64 were awesome (though I prefer Ocarina to Majora's Mask); SSB is still a game I play regularly. Everyone has named my other favourites, except, has anyone played the N64 version of Tetris? BEST version ever of Tetris, hands down. The music is so awesome, as are the environments, and a couple other extras here and there. Aaaand I've never been beaten. I think the N64 was more fun (still is) than the original PS - the games were just better. I mean there were some good PS games but I mean, you never hear of anyone these days getting out their old PS games, but people flock to play an old N64 great.

I never owned the N64 Tetris, but I used to rent it all the time and play against my older sister. That game was great. I love the DS version so much more, though.

Anyone disappointed, like me, that they never came out with a Gameboy adapter for this system? Sure, they had that slot you could put in the controller, but nothing like the Super Gameboy for the SNES, or the Gameboy Reader for the GC. I was angry back then.

That was the "slot in the controller" I was referring to, not the Super GameBoy peripheral they were going to develop.

i used to think that the reason why Nintendo never developed any such "Super Gameboy" type of peripheral for the N64 was simply the way the CPU and processors were designed. Obviously, there a familiar distinctive 3D look to the visuals, and it was always my faux perception that it was due to the way the n64 was designed.

I believed this, until I saw the original Donkey Kong arcade game included as part of Donkey Kong 64,.then I thought "well, if it can produce flat, sharp visuals like this,..why didnt Nintendo create a gameboy peripheral...and further more..they really didnt designed anything that can be used for that port on the bottom of the console"

the ill fated disk drive comes to mind.

Yeah was linking the Pak for the sake of linking.

As far as the port on the bottom, there was the flop of a deal in the N64DD (Disk Drive). It didn't fare well even in Japan. Most of the Nintendo systems have those expansion slots though, just in case. Check the bottom of an original style NES sometime.
