No one said it was stupid, it's just less fun than having to put sheets of paper into envelopes 8 hours a day for a living.

I said it's stupid. Even if you're making a really great living, attending fancy dinner parties (oops, you can't cause you're too busy farming gold!), buying a nice new car (which you'll only drive to the grocery store twice a month for cheetos), etc., what are you going to tell people who ask what you do for a living? "I sell fake money for real money"? Can you really tell that to people and be proud of it?

Seriously, go get a real job. Be a vet and heal animals. Be a television repairman and help other people to be lazy. Learn how to craft something REAL and then sell that for real money. Do something that won't be immediately forgotten as soon as you turn into dust.

Don't they use bots or some kind of hack to farm gold and items? I know there are a lot of tools that can instantly transport you to areas where rare monsters "pop", or automators that you can set macros up for and have them fish / mine / whatever for you. Sometimes they aren't necessarily sitting at a PC all day -- maybe a few hours, max, if you're sad enough to memorize the times the server resets.

... It's not that sad to sell fake money for real money, especially if it ends up making you more money than it would if you had a real job (is that even possible?). Buying fake money, though? That's just unacceptable.

.... (... though I did buy Gil a few times for FFXI a few years back. Totally regret it now though, I could've used it for other things than that stupid game. lol.)

Most MMORPGs will ban you if they detect you using a program or some such cheat to get your gold/exp. As such, an entrepreneur will set up a LAN with X computers, and X employees who get paid minimum wage to farm. I knew someone (read: a loser) who did this for a while. When his boss stopped letting him have lunch/smoke breaks because some people were putting in overtime hours (and not getting paid for it) and farming more than him, he quit.

There is a book called "alter ego" that, though it it more of your usual new age big pictured few large letters type of literature, adresses the issue of "MMOG farmers",in some places they re pretty much sweatshop callcenters (not that Callcenters aren`t already that)

Botting is not really possible in WoW. And those money-grubbing fucks (I mean Blizzard) fall on everyone who's trying to dabble into their business like a ton of rectangular building material.
Anyway, this farming-goldselling is usually done by foreign skint people who are paid less than minimum wage for doing this stuff by a wealthy businessman. Having about 10 farmers and paying them in proportion with the amount of gold they raise, even including the price of separate accounts, is supposed to make a hefty profit.

Online sweatshops...although they must really suck, in a way, it's sort of cool.

Though...don't they run the risk of being wiped out by marauder hordes of players or something?

I think they just stick to middly safe areas and just kill easy critters endlessly for gold.
Damn wish I had that book nearby,it gives a pretty good explanation of how they handle farming in WoW...
