I was in Japan at the time and Japan gets new movies about a year and a half after Patagonia.

You're from Patagonia, MG? As in, Brazil? ohmy.gif

I saw "the making of Star Wars" too. It was a Friday night special that came on after (in our sydicated market) Sha Na Na (Ugh). It was still better than being treated to the Ewooks.
We saw the ad in TV guide, and waited the weeks for the show. When it was over and they played the theatrical music, I thought "Gosh that moves quicker than the MECO song"

Thanks for the reminder, Toru-chan! I'd forgotten all about that! smile.gif

First time I saw him, he was in a BW photo. Sitting on director's chairs with Sir Alec, the pic ran in the inside cover of the Marvel comics SW Volume (1-3). The text was praising GL for bringing us these new worlds. Scruffy young director in flannel is what I saw. I hadn't seen the films yet, so my thoughts were "Why are they lauding this no-name with the high praise?"

My GL hate didn't flow so much until Jedi came out. I don't recall GL from the Making of SW special. I do remember Alec Guinness and some special effect guys with Matte Painting technology, and the landspeeder / behind the scenes stuff.

That's the one. I'd like to see it again for the nostalgia value, but It seems to have vanished off the face of the Earth. Google around and the only Lucas adverdoco that exists now is 'Empire of Dreams'. Can't find the empire one either. Following the TESB theme, I thought it was the best adverdoco of the three. It was largely about the SFX.

1. "Making of Star Wars" 1977
2. "Making of The Empire Strikes Back" 1980
3. "Star Wars To Jedi: The Making Of A Saga" 1983

Something I did find that was interesting was this fandoco: Anyone seen it?

No, I'm Australian (and Patagonia is a different country to Brazil). I was just using it for a comparison as I guess it must be pretty far down the release list. I imagine the release order for new films to be a little like this:

- DVD Bootlegs arrive in first Thailand, then Russia / The film opens in cinemas in America and then across Europe and most of Asia / countries in Africa and South America get their turn next followed by a special screening for anybody living in a research station in Antartica / sometime after this, the film appears in Australian cinemas / an albatross then drops a copy of the reel at Easter Island / then it appears in Patagonia... and a year and a half later, when everybody including the Patagonians have the film on DVD, it comes out in a cinema in Japan.

Now back on topic...

I think Toru Chan raises a good point, and Civilian made the same point earlier in another thread, about how it was a lot more likely in those earlier years for everybody to be watching and talking about the same thing at the same time. It's a shame that's gone. It's also a shame that a lot of nice stuff from the time has disappeared with it - drive-in cinemas, the Saturday night movie (now we're just saturated with crappy movies on television at all kinds of odd hours), interesting movie covers
-> has anyone else noticed that in the past, video sleeves had really interesting cover art and how nowadays, almost every film poster/DVD cover just has some generic photos of the lead actors? They also have the wrong names over the actors too for some stupid reason as well, so if you had a picture of Bob Smith on the left and Jack Generic on the right, Jack's name would appear above Bob and Bob's name would appear above Jack. It's freakin' stupid.

... okay, stay on topic, Movie Goer...

Oh, I quite liked Despondent's comment about when the hate for George Lucas started. I just think it's so funny because if the man hadn't made the special editions or the prequels, I would think he was a legend right now. When I was a kid, I remember thinking he was really cool and when my older siblings told me a tallie about how they were cast as ewoks when they were younger, I remember asking them what George Lucas was like in person. Man, I was gullible back then.

GL proved that sci-fi can make absurd amounts of money. So what happened? There should have been a generation of Indy GL-wannabees all producing their own films. The net now should be brimming with quality, thought provoking, Indy films. Instead, Hollywood has settled on remaking every film in existence: From "Alfie" to "Superman". Give it up. Do something new. Same for you too, GL.

Mein Gott. I noticed that too. Guessed it was some subliminal marketing trick to make you look at the poster for longer than you otherwise would. If this is the best Hollywood can come up with to get you into their movies, no wonder there's so much crap.

Which raises another idea: Given everyone has absurdly powerful PCs, digital video, 3DSMAX why aren't fans cranking out their own movies (and not Star Wars rip offs), but their own stuff. If in High School me and my buddies turned out so much Super 8, what's holding up the Bond generation? ;-) I don't think any of the crap on YouTube counts.

That's funny! :-) GL probably hasn't changed in all those years (people seldom do). Screwing up TPM was one thing. I mean, it happens. Occasionally a film stinks, so you fire everyone, apologize to your fans and star afresh. LucasFilm did leak stories about how GL got the message from TPM, but the interviews he gave we very contradictory: The old "If I have offended anyone, Then I apologize'. Basically: "Go F* yourselves". And then he didn't clean them up anyway: His insistence on including Jar Jar in AOTC showed that.

The "One in the Bank" concept: I think when TPM bombed, many people (and me eventually) said "Well, ok, I saw it, but I'm not going to see any more in the cinema". When TPM was a huge financial success, GL probably thought he was vindicated. When AOTC didn't do so well, I'm guessing then he got the message.

I think that's the problem, youtube does count. all these kids can film whatever total crap they want and put it up for millions to see with no effort, as opposed to a time when sure you could make millions of miles of super 8 films but no one would see them unless you actually made an effort to make something quality and then get them noticed.

Well, I've seen a lot of quality films on YouTube; shouldn't take long for another one to pop up. wink.gif
