You know what I can't stand? That commercial where all the guys are in the big macho pickup truck. There's one guy in the back seat and he's singing along with a Shania Twain song. The guys in the back seat are kinda edging away from him in a totally homophobic way (no one wants to touch legs with the guy singing Shania Twain!). The guy in the front passenger seat looks pained, bordering on pissed off while the driver is just plain freaked out.

What the hell is their problem? If they're so bothered by this then why the hell are they playing a Shania Twain CD in the first place?

Don't know this add, but I'm happy to report that I'm happy to look at Shania Twain. Maybe I just don't appreciate her music so much. huh.gif

I think they are freaked out because the man is singing the world's worst female empowerment song EVER. The best thing about being a woman is NOT the perogative to have a little fun, totally crazy, give 'em a lady, man's shirt, short skirt, uh-oh-oh-oh, gotta be free to feel the way I feel. I don't know exactly what it is, but I suspect it is more than sartorial freedom.

It still doesn't stand to reason. Why are they playing it in the first place?

I'm sure it's for humor, over anaylzing it could do more harm than good.

I think the man is wearing headphones. They can't hear Shania as clearly as we can, but they can hear him singing along "I Feel Like a Woman!"

The ad pisses me off too.

Is he really? I hadn't noticed. I'll have to watch for it during tonight's game. I didn't notice them before. If he IS wearing headphones then my theory is kinda shot to hell, though his friends are still homophobic assholes.

I'll report after the game tonight.

This is ridiculous. Homophobia? Come on, now. The dudes in the truck are creeped out by a dufus who sings "Man, I feel like a woman" and so they're homophobic? I don't know. They didn't bash his skull in, drag him behind the truck or anything else.

The application of slanderous terms to people of opposing viewpoints has gotten too far out of hand. The people who whine the loudest about wanting to eliminate "labels" are the same ones who stick them to everything. I find THAT more offensive than any stupid commercial.

A more accurate term might be transgender/transexual-phobic since it is a guy singing about being a woman, not a guy singing about liking guys.....

Since when do you have to do such a thing to be homophobic? All you have to do is be afraid of homosexuals. An example would be when men are sitting in close quarters (i.e. in the back of a truck) and they sidle away from each other so their legs don't accidentally touch because, as we all know, that automatically makes you gay.

Homophobia is a fear of homosexuality, not an outright expression of violence towards it. People that are afraid of heights don't go knocking down tall buildings and blowing up mountains. They just are uncomfortable of heights and avoid them.

Okay, I saw the commercial again last night. The guy is DEFINITELY not wearing headphones.

Maybe they were just embarresd by his bad singing.. and didn't want to be associated with him. Although you are probably right.. like in a Man's Truck, you shouldn't be singing that song.

Yeah, you're right--it doesn't make sense if he's not wearing headphones. Like, it's OK to listen to Shania but not to sing along? It's OK to listen, but not to like it? I guess maybe they're on a road trip "everyone gets to listen to x tracks of their own music" rotation, but you'd think that would be a privilege that goes along with shotgun, and the man who likes Shania is in the back seat. So the commercial is perplexing.

It's just bogus. They're all hipster Gen-X types as well. If that were the case they would be delighted by the irony of it all.

They are shabby hipsters.
