There are some movies, as the Strangelove thread has revealed, that are SO good. So unbelievably awesome that they can never, and should never, be remade. They're too epic, too well written, or too damn funny to repeat. Lightning never strikes twice, and waving a branch from a stricken tree over your head won't attract it.

So, other than Strangelove, I'd say that there's one DEFINITE movie they shouldn't remake.

Airplane. They shouldn't remake Airplane.

Or the original Star Wars trilogy.

What do you guys think?

I don't think they should remake Casablanca; it's too sacred. Strangelove, however, is fair game. wink.gif

A Clockwork Orange
Romero's original "Dead" trilogy (OH WAIT. THEY ALREADY DID, AND THEY ALL FUCKED UP)
The Evil Dead trilogy
The Exorcist
The Changeling
Poltergeist
Gremlins (Though a potential remake with "extreme" gremlins that skateboard and swill Mountain Dew would be hilarious)
Akira

On that topic, movies that were remade, that should have been left alone:
Night Of The Living Dead
Dawn Of The Dead
The Amityville Horror
The House On Haunted Hill
The Haunting
The Poseidon Adventure
Black Christmas
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Psycho
The Fog
Get Carter
The Italian Job (Though to be fair, neither is very good)

Yeah I guess you can tell that I hold horror movies very close.

Hmmm...

Raising Arizona doesn't need to be remade.

My favorite movies, however, have some flaws that might need to be taken care of, although this could probably be done with edit.

I know I'll think of something else...

Back to the Future does not need to be remade.
"I've come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubble gum."
-John Carpenter's They Live

"God help us...in the future."
-Plan 9 from Outer Space

I'd probably actually make an attempt at a modern retooling of Dr. Strangelove, but that's just me. biggrin.gif

Films that should not be remade -

Indiana Jones trilogy (to hell with this bastard 4th one they're making)
Highlander
The Blues Brothers
Stripes
Fritz Lang's Metropolis
I am the Fisher King.

I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an obi-wan to go.

What about The Testament of Dr. Mabuse or The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, then? sad.gif

Out of all the Bond movies, You Only Live Twice is the only one I would even consider seriously remaking. That thing was so far removed from the original Fleming story, you could have substituted Harry Palmer for Bond and nothing would have changed! angry.gif

Actually I would like to see a remake of "Metropolis" or any of those silent German films, but I don't have enough faith in modern day Hollywood for it to be good. Unless of course it was directed Guillermo Del Toro.

Ah, Harry Palmer... have you seen all 3 of those? I've only seen "The Ipcress File" and "Funeral In Berlin".

Harry Palmer was nowhere near as good as the first four Bond films, but at least it was better than Matt Helm. sick.gif

As for Metropolis: yes, I fancied a remake myself, as well, but I've always seen Ewan McGregor as Freder. I don't know why. mellow.gif

Also, I can imagine inserting a subplot in which Freder finds out that he is actually Rotwang's son, instead of Joh Frederson's, but I fear that would be too derivative of Star Wars. sad.gif

I think a remake of metropolis would probably involve way too much cgi and would divert from the main storyline.

Speaking of sci-fi remakes, The Day the Earth Stood Still SHOULD be on that list, but they are actually going to remake that one.

Yeah, with Keanu Reeves.

I wouldn't remake GOODFELLAS, THE GODFATHER, CITIZEN KANE, THE MALTESE FALCON, CHINATOWN, BLADE RUNNER, BRAZIL, THE PRINCESS BRIDE, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA or THIS IS SPINAL TAP.

If anyone touches The Princess Bride, I will kill people. And it would be completely missing the point to remake This is Spinal Tap. Sadly, people are stupid enough to not realize that.

Absolutely no horror movie needs to be remade, especially by people with the last name of Zombie. Isn't that a little bit overkill to begin with (sorry, no pun intended.)

Agreed. That movie must always be left untouched.

Everyone else already mentioned movies I was was going to say, and movies I never wanted remade were remade anyways. sad.gif

...Totally outraged they're making a Chipmunks movie.
