I've never heard of this "bruising", nor tasted it when having a shaken drink. An interesting bit of trivia to be sure. And of course, like I said, there was something wrong with the vodka: it was cheap. tongue.gif

Well, one man's "classic" is another man's "cheap", I guess... wink.gif

I've not heard of bruising, but it makes sense. When you shake a drink, you're essentially mixing air into it. O2, N2, and CO2 can have noticeable effects on taste in liquids. It's sort of a chemical thing. A good example of this is Hydrogen Peroxide. The process for making it is to bubble pure oxygen through plain water. The O2 forms weak bonds with the water and tada. Heat, shaking and time will eventually release the Oxygen, breaking its bonds and rebonding into O2 as ions tend to do, leaving you water. That's why it has an expiration date. But yeah... most should know what H2O2 tastes like.

And what of cheap potato vodka, that which you supposedly termed "classic"? tongue.gif

ha! its kinda of funny that when this thread opened, many thought the topic was a dull sleeper.

but the slightest mention of alcoholic references, and it gives a big buzz abroad. (no pun intended)

It was to my understanding that Bond ordered his drinks shaken and not stirred because shaking breaks the ice and essentially waters down the drink. smile.gif

I thought it was something to do with poision when Bond did it...

Well, someone did try to poison Bond's drink in Casino Royale, but that was after he had ordered his drink.

A full description:

'A dry martini,' he said. 'One. In a deep champagne goblet.'
'Oui, monsieur.'
'Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet.
Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?'
'Certainly monsieur.' The barman seemed pleased with the idea.
'Gosh, that's certainly a drink,' said Leiter.
Bond laughed. 'When I'm...er...concentrating,' he explained, 'I never have more than one
drink before dinner. But I do like that one to be large and very strong and very cold, and
very well-made. I hate small portions of anything, particularly when they taste bad.
This drink's my own invention. I'm going to patent it when I think of a good name.'

I'm not an expert, but I do consider my taste in alcohol at least somewhat refined. Minus wine... can't stand the stuff.
