Inside the Mind of God^H^H^HGeorge Lucas
Does anyone believe Star Wars is real? Aside from a few clinically delusional cases, probably not. Does anyone *want* to believe it's real? Sure. Fan Boys. They have their secret fantasy world where they (or whichever character they project through) are important, brave and admired (aka Lucas' "Anyone can be a General Rule"). Are there people, who knowing in their hearts that it isn't real, can at the same time think it is real? I suspect so: that may be the Fan Boy Syndrome.
There's a line in 1984 where one of the bad dudes says "If we want to say the Earth is flat, then it is flat. Now for the purposes of navigation we can briefly hop into an imaginary world where we pretend it is round so we can do some calculation. But when we are done, we return to the real world where the Earth is Flat." Fan Boys may live in this sort of duality.
Why do they believe George Lucas no matter what he is saying this year as opposed to a few years before? Maybe because if they doubt him ("Hey! He *IS* changing it as he goes!") it's hard to keep the belief that it is sort of kind of real. If Lucas changes his imaginary world in which they live, they accept it. If he changes it somewhat (Midichlorians, anyone?), they accept it. But if he changed it too much, they start to fall off. Only the more extreme cases hang on.
So it could be a matter of how much someone wants to believe: Chef Elf is occupied by people who fell off halfway through: The Reformed Church of Lucasology. Force.net is occupied by the Fanatic Lucasologists: The Lucasofacists.
Well, maybe that's how GL picked up Marcia.
Post Marcia and her Toy Boy, Lucas dated Linda Ronstadt so he must be capable of some sexy talk. What line would he have used? "Hey Baby, let's put a mask on little Boba". Oh Lucas, you stud! :-)
