rare games you want to play, but probably never will.

there are several titles that have been deemed a rare status and are sought over feverishly by avid collectors. for whatever reasons, these games are grails cast in gold and owning them is a royalty.

but aside from that, there are some games that arent so rare, (but not so common) that should be duplicated. such games that never got a chance to be enjoyed, and probably never will due to the company who made the game simply not wanting to reissue it.

...and that sucks.

we live in a day in age that every game should be readily accessible, sadly there are some that arent. why is this?

i understand that owning the actual game, in its actual cartridge, complete with manual, etc. spawns value

but im talking about having the same game available on an emulator or other classic compilation available for play. i know that doing this would reduce the overall worth of the rare game in question..but so what...it gives other gamers a chance to experience a game that they would never had the chance to otherwise.

specifically,..i would love to have been able to play Ninja Gaiden Trilogy on SNES.,.but its currently fetching price tags in excess of over $100.00.

.....sigh.

Peter Brady was by far the ugliest Brady kid on the "Brady Bunch". I mean, they were all pretty ugly, and the fact that the Brady dad wanted to always take the boys out on overnight camping trips just a tad bit too often, gave me the creeps.

I know what you mean...I remember my friends and I trying to find a copy of Planescape: Torment three or so years ago. That was a struggle.

And then people bitch at us when we finally find those old titles, claming that we're stealing property and such, when they can't even make money off of them anymore.

Princess: Find an SNES ROM.

I can't think of a list right now. I got Cubivore and Alien Hominid for my 'Cube recently, leaving titles I need to own for the system but don't at essentially Ikaruga, as far as rare titles go and in general. I don't have Castlevania, Mega Man, Double Dragon, or Battletoads for my NES, but they weren't rare. I can't think of a single good rare NES game off of the top of my head.

Contra comes to mind for some reason.

He then went on to post a link to a rom site and, though he had the best of intentions, is still breaking the rule about warez sites.

Is Contra considered rare? I thought it was pretty common and popular.

well..trying to find contra in vintage video game stores can be difficult, and even if you do find it,.its usually priced higher than other nes games.

it also tends to fetch high dollars on ebay/amazon, etc.

even on ebay, some sellers will regard contra as being "rare", in their auction.

i hear what youre saying though, back in 1987, along with castlevania, zelda, and other high profile mainstream titles it was mass produced and many copies were made. however, as of today, the public isnt seeing very much in the marketplace of what should have accounted for a high mass production of this game.

its harder to find contra than zelda, and many regard zelda as being a superior game to contra.

so the question boils down to: what happened to a lot of the contra copies that were made?

because, the average person should be able to walk into a vintage game store and be able to buy this game for around $5.00-$10.00,(based on the production quantity of this game in circa 1987) but this isnt the case.

i believe a lot of these contra copies are simply being horded by avid collectors.who probably own way more than one copy. a lot of avid collectors do this, they buy as much as they can of a particular item to increase its overall value. the harder an item is to find, the more that collector wants to get it,..and soon you have collectors like this who literally own about 1,000 or so copies of a particular item.

now youre saying, well this would be just one person. well, yes. but if other collectors are doing similiar practices, the problem intensifies making finding any particular item that much more difficult.

its sad that a few greedy individuals, affectionately dubbed as avid collectors, would want to rob nostalgia from the rest of us, and charge a high price for us to relive certain fond memories, but it happens all the time.

just try going to ebay, and searching under "toys & hobbies" for transformers afa, and you will see what i mean.

bastards!!

I'm trying to find quite a few legit titles for my Dreamcast, but not much luck at all. Guilty Gear X, Skies of Arcadia, and Sonic Adventure 2. I don't know if they're that hard to find on the net (I don't really wanna buy online), but locally? Near impossible.

I think a lot of the "collectability" factors regarding the dreamcast and its games, has a lot to do with the rather quick demise of the system.

the dreamcast was released on 9/9/99,.and no more than 2 years later, it wasnt even on retail store shelves.

i dont think any other system in console history has ever made such good sales on its launch date, and also be so quickly removed from the market in such a short amount of time.

For thems that want to play legally, don't mind dropping a few dollars, and aren't worried about having boxes and manuals, Gametap is a decent service. I'm currently playing Jagged Alliance 2; they've got loads of crappy stuff, but some nice things like Planescape, Baldur's Gate and friends, Jagged Alliance, Deus Ex, and quite a few others.

Streets of Rage, Contra, and a host of old-school fighters too. I've never had any real issues with them.

Suikoden series. RPGs for the PS that rival FF7. I bought mine for like thirty dollars just for suikoden 1. Two is more expensive and the series goes for like 1-2 hundred. Check it if you ever get the chance. You start the first one, win, save, and that carries over and effects the second one and so forth.
