comparing cloverfield to bwp or the ring holds no true merits, and is just dirty.
the world is a game of players & pawns with everyone striving to be the king

Looks to me like their approach is working. They didn't show much, people are talking. Can't argue that.

Yeah, well so far outside of these boards I haven't heard a single thing about the film. I haven't seen the trailer anywhere else of heard anyone else mention it. I suspect I may not be the demographic...

I saw it a few hours ago. If you weren't that interested, don't bother. It was alright, but it wasn't anything that I would recommend wholeheartedly. Definitely worth seeing if you were even a little bit curious, but I wouldn't count on it getting any awards or anything.

QUOTE (georgelucas4greedo @ Jul 16 2007, 08:50 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I've seen this movie before:
People (hipsters?) are hanging out (partying?). One says something ironic ("This is gonna be a long night!"?). Beastly invader (alien?) attacks Manhattan (LA?) for no apparent reason (never crossed the writer's mind). City is destroyed and a few minor (minority?) characters are killed. Band of heroes (cool guy and hot girl?) join up with US Army (Marines) to attack said monster. Heroes attack with traditional warfare (missiles?) and fail. Someone has sex (said guy and girl?/monster and giant hole in ground?). Heroes then figure out weakness in monster (detachable penis?) in which they fly (climb?) into. Battle worn general (Bill Pulman?) sets up some kind of explosion (poison) in monster. Bomb doesn't go off (negative, negative, didnt go in?). Hero (cool guy?) then sets up the bomb correctly and said monster is killed. Monster lays dead (unconscious?) and insurance companies weep.

How many things was I right about? Not that many from what I can remember of an awesome movie that I saw yesterday.

It seems like everyone is over the nitpicking. Too bad.

just saw this film tonight....and it didnt live up to my expectaations...

dont keep on reading, unless you dont mind spoilers......

.......................................

**** SPOILER CONTENT...WARNING *****

I dont even know why i put spoiler content up there..cause theres really nothing to spoil about this film.

if you were like me and watched the trailers on youtube over and over...youll immediately notice that two small minor scenes that were in the trailer wasnt even in the film at all. the first was when the girl, Beth tells Rob "Rob, have fun in Japan"...the other scene was when the partygoers were dancing to the high-pitched techno music (the last song that plays in the trailer before the rumble and lights go out)

sorry..just had to point out those minimal details, but these scenes that were never included in the film leads me down the road that this film is rather deceptive.

if you paid at the ticket booth to see a great monster film, then its with certainty that you will walk into the wrong theatre..cause cloverfield isnt the movie youre expecting.

the film is 90 minutes long and was filmed on a budget of $30 million...and that budget remains apparent as through the entire duration of the film. you only see the monster for less than 5 minutes of these 90 minutes.

so what are you watching for the other 85 minutes? well, about 15 minutes seems to be footage of the going away party--that is really drawn out too long and has little bearing to the actual plot of the film

the other 70 minutes (the majority of the film..or the basic synopsis of the film...take your pick) is all about Rob, Hud, and 2 chicks whose names seem to escape my mind..and their daring journey amid the darkness of the New York night,.and the destructive aftermath of some creature that you barely get to see at all during this film....these 4 young brave friends set out to rescue Beth who is trapped in her apartment.

So yeah, this isnt Godzilla-esque....but think more towards Nicholas Cage in "World Trade Center".

my big bitch about Cloverfield is how J.J. Abrams gets away with poor cinematograghy of this whole film by featuring in the style of it being shot on a camcorder.

Blair Witch Project looks leagues better than Cloverfield in the cinematography department.

the camera is often shaky..sometimes the camera is pointed down at the floor, or is cutting off people's heads....i know he was striving for an amatuer feel..but give me a break...i dont know of too many people who would purposely cut off someone's head while filming...especially a group of tech-savvy kids in their 20's,..which is what were are to believe our protagonists to be.

what views you do get of the cloverfield monster seem rather distorted and blurry..not exactly sharp visuals..at least judging by my keen eye....and i do have 20/20 vision.

the acting is horrible...this is probably what is the worst thing about this film. No one really freaks out too much about anything.

Hud says "Oh my God" 4 times when the Lady Libertys head comes to rest in the street...but he seems to be the only one that is emotionally shook up by the whole damn thing...and even he brushes it off and soon uses his cell phone to take a souvenir snapshot of it.

when the chick,..i think her name was marlene..i forget..anyways, when she gets bitten by the spider-alien parasite thing that looks reminscent of the videogame "Armorines"...she isnt even in a state of shock or pain....even though she has 15 gi-normous bites from that fucked-up spider alien thing.

i would be freaking out if it was me,..but Rob manages to bust open the Aquafina vending machine and passes her a bottle of water to ease her pains.

Nope..its only when Marlene starts bleeding from her eye, and is soon dragged off by two guys in biohazard uniforms that she soon explodes like a bag of spaghetti sauce in a ziploc bag in a microwave.

if you have no life,.or are just flat out bored,..stay after everyone else leaves the theatre...and watch the entire ending credits scroll by...and at the very tail end of the credits youll hear a radio static break through and a voice saying "EVILA LLITS STI"..which is "its still alive" backwards

the only reason i did that is cause prior to seeing this crappy film, i read the spoiler on wikipedia, where someone specifically stated that is says that at the end of the film...otherwise i would have promptly left the theatre like every one else with a high IQ did.

the bottom line is..this film sucks..if you must watch it...rent it on dvd when it comes out. i dont think ill be in attendance for any sequels, which judging by that incripted message at the end, seems evident.

So it's like Blair Witch Project, all POV and alleged found footage? What's the reasoning at the end for people talking backwards? Is that some oddball effort at creating an online hunt for Easter eggs, or does it have any significance at all?

So what you're saying is your long-winded post was just as unnecessary as all of your other long-winded posts, and you could have condensed it down to something much more brief with no loss of information?

Pardon my interjection:

Why is the movie called 'Cloverfield'? That's the only thing that has slightly tempted me to see it. It's the only question I want answered. I don't care about the monster or the Statue of Liberty's head.

Okay, everyone can get back to being snippy and arguing about a movie called 'Cloverfield' now. As you were.

Don't act surprised, you told us about that Weeks ago.

Chef, it's named for a highway exit near the studio. Or something like that (not that I've added anything).

Cloverfield is the government's designated name for this case, like the Manhattan Project. It is more clear if you see the film why the government's name is relevant.

All Ive seen of this thing so far is that it has a picture of a fucked up statue of liberty. As such I wont be watching it. Why is it that every disaster/monster movie, when considering the human effects, has to ask the question, ``What will the statue of liberty think of this?`` Seriously. Godzilla, That movie with the comets, that movie with the floods, etc etc. I have no emotional attachment to the statue of liberty, but the US has plenty of other landmarks you can cut and paste chunks out of and then put in your movie poster, lame asses.
