Here's a dramatic story of a 13 year old girl and her uncle in a shark attack by a great white.

QUOTE
"We were just surfing and she was probably five or 10 metres out in front of me," he said.

"The next thing I know she screamed and disappeared under the water.

"She came up and was fighting the shark and hitting it and screaming 'help me, help me, help me'. We didn't see it coming.

"It dragged her around a bit and then she went down and under again. I was really worried. There was blood all in the water.

Read the story yourself - it's not that long - then ask yourself, what would happen if Lucas/Spielberg teamed up to make that today, what would it look like?

My guess:

* There would be a hundred CGI sharks, maybe a thousand, all leaping and somersaulting
* One of the characters would be CGI with long floppy ears
* One would provide the much needed Lucasarian Comic Relief
* They wouldn't shoot it in a real water - to save costs they'd have ILM's renderfarms burning megawatts to churn out CGI water
* Each actor would be filmed by themselves against blue screen
* Everything but closeups would use 'digital doubles' for the actors

Lucas didn't have anything to do with the original JAWS. Yeah, today we'd see more of the shark even in a Spielberg solo outing, because now Spielberg can spend more money. I don't think that this means necessarily that it would have been a bad movie, but my guess is it would have had a Tom Hanks or a Leo DiCaprio instead of a Richard Dreyfuss.

There was a decent amount of CGI water in THE PERFECT STORM. That's just the state of the art. I'd prefer real water (and also a better movie; PS sucked), but it depends on how much time you plan to be in it. Filming in real water is what asploded the budget on WATERWORLD.

"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

Knew that.

After seeing what Spielberg did with Crystal Skull, I'm not so sure.

Yes. I don't think name actors improve these movies. Good unknowns would probably be better.

True. In something like PS hard to summon up those ocean conditions in RL. I was noting Lucas' tendency to use CGI for everything. Nearly every shot in the PT is filmed on blue screen sets and added later. Funnily, they all look fake.

Don't forget the Comedic relief. The Attack on the Death Star had no 'comedic relief'. TESB had a bit, but it wasn't as over-the-top as the PT's laughafest: How can you take seriously Jedi's being slaughtered mercilessly by roger-roger droids and CGI bugs while C3PO is wisecracking unfunny jokes?
