The Played Out List
Episode 1: BOM-Chicka BOW-WOW!

There's nothing more annoying than a joke that's completely played out. A joke so universally overdone that it's not even a joke anymore but rather a knee jerk reaction to something being mentioned by someone else. Step 1: Someone mentions something. Step 2: Someone else says something because they think they're a comedy genius even though they're repeating something that's been said a million times before (e.g. Pirates. Ahhrrrrr.).

The signs that something has reached it's limit are usually obvious. The first sign is that it's mentioned on a primetime sitcom. Secondly, it shows up in a TV commercial for a major product. Thirdly, it's conceivable that you're grandmother would get the joke. Just for the record: if your grandmother gets the joke, it's no longer a funny inside joke. It's just sad.

One recent example is Snoopspeak. I apologize if I have just coined that term, but you probably know what I'm talking about. Some idiot thinks they're hilarious because they say, "Fo-shizzle, my nizzle." Or, "My bellybizzle is itchizzle, my nizzle." Or some other stupid thing with "izzle" tacked onto the end of it. Guess what: you're not hilarious. This is overdone. Your inside joke is not funny when you think you're a comedian for saying it. Your inside joke is not an inside joke when everyone in the English speaking world says it instinctively to get a cheap laugh. Your inside joke is not funny anymore when someone over the age of 75 gets it. I'm pretty sure my grandmother has heard the "izzle" thing. She may not know the etymology of it, but she's heard it. It's probably been used to sell kitty litter at this point.

Every so often Chefelf reaches his limit with one of these and feels the need to vent in a little series we (read: Chefelf) like(s) to call: The Played Out List.

Okay, sorry about that. Now that everyone's familiar with the thrust of this new series (be prepared for this "series" to only ever contain 2-3 entries once I get bored/distracted) I can continue on.

The latest thing that's annoyed me is people going: "BOM-Chicka BOW-WOW!" You've all seen this. It's almost exclusively used as a reference to porn music. The ironic part being that there probably hasn't been a pornographic movie made with a wah guitar soundtrack since 1973. It has recently devolved to the point where it's used to mean almost anything mildly sexual. If someone is wearing a sweater and decides to remove it because they are warm, they will undoubtedly suffer through some jackass singing: "BOM-Chicka BOW-WOW!" Because it's like they're stripping. Ha ha.

I wish people would just stop with this. On a related note, it's annoying when people do a parody of a pornographic movie and are always referencing a plumber, TV repair man or other service technician coming to the woman's house and then being paid with sexual favors after an awkwardly written banter filled with poorly conceived innuendo. Again, not funny. Not only is it not funny but I'd be willing to bet that there hasn't been a movie made using this premise/plot since the late seventies.

So, in short, stop singing BOM-Chicka BOW-WOW! It doesn't do anyone any good except to show the world that you are an unfunny, unoriginal ignoramus who has never had a unique thought or idea in your entire life.

Thank you.

I'm guessing you saw the new Axe commercial.

Ya this is what i'm talking about. When I made a post on office women making a big deal over chocolate, this is what I was getting at.

It's so predictable that it could never be funny. It makes you feel embarrised and ashamed.

I've heard Bum-chicka-BOW-wow too many times, and, although it can actually get a certain person I know to do a striptease, it has no other practical purpose.

Particularly, saying it every ten seconds during an episode of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" doesn't make you funny. It makes you a jackass, ruining a perfectly funny show by using a played out joke every ten seconds. Seriously. Just SHUT THE HELL UP! Those innuendos? THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE THERE! THAT'S THE POINT! YOU DON'T HAVE TO POINT THEM OUT!

It reminds me of an annoying tune I heard a long time ago.
I haven't heard it since and it did sound like a joke.

This is how I've always felt about the audience participation for the ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. None of it is original or funny. Every piece of canonised participation is just a repeat of the joke or worse, a dumb stunt based on something that is being played out on screen. Folks jump up opn stage and do exactly what their favorite character is saying. People fire off squirt guns when it's raining, or throw cards when Frank sings the word "dealing" in his last song. When Riff Raff calls for Frank and Frank is giving Brad a blow job, Frank says "coming!" So some smart asses in the audience shout out "So is Brad!" Like, do you think the filmmakers weren't already making that joke? What I hate most of course about the whole RHPS is how everyone who goes to the participation nights says the movie is no good but the participation is fun. Actually, the movie itslef is sorta fun, in its own way, while the participation is asinine.

PS: By the way, is the show you're talking about anime? I've never heard of it.

PPS: Right there with you on that one about the chocolate, Jordan. That was a great thread.

PPPS: Chef, are folks really still doing the "izzle" thing? I remember Adam Sandler making fun of it on the MTV Movie awards something like 5 years ago. I thought it was played out after that. I swear I haven't heard anyone doing it more than once a year since.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

Still all true. That list is like 5 years old and needs some SERIOUS updating. My plan is to continue updating it...

But it probably won't happen.

Yes, it is indeed an anime. A rather fun one at that.

Nice topic. I can clearly see that you're thinking outside the box on this one.

And by that, I mean to say I wish people would STOP SAYING "THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX", already.

If an old guy can add his voice to this commentary, may I also ask everyone in the world to quit adding "gate" to the end of every political scandal. Whitewatergate, Monicagate, I got caught stealing gate, shoot your buddy while you are out hunting gate, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

Watergate was the name of the damn office building. period. Nixon's dead and so should be this annoying practice.
