I just installed a 500 GB external drive, putting my total storage capacity between all three of my hard drives up to 700 GB. This is what heaven must be like.
Now I just need to save up for one of those 1 TB drives, and I'll pretty much be ready to die happy.

I am in the process of saving up for four 750 gigabyte sata drives (I decided now) with a Megaraid controller but I'll use one drive for the backup. I get paranoid of new drives failing for some reason.

By the time I save up enough for them they will go down in price like they normally do. Sorry to rain on your parade but my other single drives I suspect are on their last legs then my parade can be lost at anytime. They run all day and night since 2003 and another drive since 2004 to this day on my file server. I was planning this for a long time.

On second thoughts I don't know by your comment if you mean't that I was implying something like this:
"Ha ha ha ha ha I have a bigger drive than yours."

I hear people say that comment but I don't look at it like that. I don't mean to be rude. I just have a lot of stuff to store on them and I think as drives get bigger and using them for mass storage to store important things it is always good to go the extra way for a backup drive to put in raid incase the first one fails. I could have brought one earlier but not have the savings for this idea. I do consider that there is a probable chance of two breaking down at the same time especially if they came from a faulty batch. Then I'd copy the importing things onto DVD discs before that and leave some things on the previous drive.

Wouldn't you save up for a second or third drive including one as backup with maybe a good quality second hand raid controller if you had a fear of drives failing for mass storage?

To me as well as space security also makes up heaven.

Why in the name of Jebus would you need so much space?

To put things into perspective, it took about an hour and a half for all of my music to transfer from my internal 120 GB drive to the new external 500 GB. I have a little over 100 GB of music stored on my computer right now.

And hell is when that hdd dies.
I've invested in an Infrant ReadyNAS and filled it with 4 drives in a RAID 5 which left me with just over 1TB of space. The great thing is that if one hdd dies it has zero effect on me, I simply plug in a new one. Even if you just use it for backup it'd still be a PITA to restore a terabyte of backed up data. If I'm storing anything over 320GB I'm putting it into a RAID array for peace of mind.

Well, my next project is to start purchasing those giant CD storage binders, and an ungodly amount in bulk CDRs and backing everything up. It can't hurt to have a hard copy of each album anyway.
