i just got back from shopping at fry's. for those who dont know its a huge electronics superstore that sells computers, movies, games, music, electronics, etc.

As I was shopping I overheard a conversation with a customer and two of the store's employees. The conversation carried on for about a good 10 minutes or so as I was browsing along in the aisles, and it almost became sort of a heated discussion, if you will.

The two store employees were both white males, looking to be in the early 20's. The customer was a white male, about in his late 40's/early 50's.

The customer had inquired what the differences were between HD-DVD & Blu-Ray technology. Obviously, it seems the customer may have come to Fry's today to possibly purchase a machine, once he was able to obtain the information he needed to make a decision between the two.

....he wasnt getting anywhere with the utter lack of confidence of information he was receiving...

One of the employees proceeded to tell the customer that HD-DVD is like the Beta version of higher-def disc technology., and Blu-Ray is like VHS. Needless to say, I was lost at the word go from these clowns confusing attempts at meaningless technological analogies.

The customer was clueless too:..

"Well now, I see that Sony created the Blu-Ray technology,.but it is gonna get swept away since Microsoft's XBOX 360 and Nintendo's Wii are embracing the HD-DVD technology. I dont even understand why people would even want to buy Blu-Ray in the first place"

The customer's statement was only guided into further confusion by some of the perplexing answers he was given by the Fry-Guys.

"well, sir...Blu-ray is the way to go,.because it gives a full 1080hp resolution, and a much sharper line aliazation than HD-DVD can. Youre gonna get much sharper audio with Blu-Ray, because its a higher form of technology than HD-DVD is."

(sigh)...Seriously..this man was lost, and wasnt getting anywhere close to home with the answers he was recieving. I guess its a catch 22 scenario for the poor customers, they want the best product at the lowest price, and to get that lowest price, the company selling the product must hire totally unintelligible amateurs to sell their products.

Now, if only every electronics superstore could employ very sharp, intelligent, wise, brilliant and clever individuals that would give the correct answer to every question every time. Someone who harnesses such immense knowledge about their product, that their knowledge becomes almost to the point of being annoying. total friggin nerds in knowing absolutely everything there is to know about the product they service....

...someone like...the outlandish nerds that work at Gamestop!!!

"Yes, ..In Super Mario Brothers 2,.There are mushrooms in fact,.on the 3rd level, 16 blocks before you get to the end, there is a secret vase you can go down, and inside that vase, is a key you will need to unlock a door..its actually best in that level to use Princess Peach, because she can float the farthest"

"Toad??...no I would not use Toad in that specific level,.I have died many times while trying to beat the game with Toad in that level,.as I said before,..USE PRINCESS PEACH,.OK?...I've played the game 187 times so far,..this Wednesday will make my 188th time..Not having a girlfriend ever, gives you lots of time to play cool games."

"Ok sir, youre total price for this game comes to $10.99,..did you want the Gamestop extended warranty for $2.00 more?..protects your game if anything goes wrong?...How about a one-year subscription to Game Informer magazine?....cause if you get that, you can get 10% off any game in our store."

Blu ray gives you sharper audio? Hows that?
I don't like my audio sharp.

Everytime I see an advert in computer superstores they attempt to emulate a technical voice when it sounds patronising to me. They fail to tell the customers about the cheap poor quality boards or cheap unmentioned stuff they bundle with their exclusive bargain packages in the adverts. It is A Pentium 4, it is very powerful, it does this and that (in a tone like no other could do the job) for internet browsing with the latest blah blah blah and with the latest drivers will help speed up your performance and your media dvd and mp3 playback. Now when I see one of these patronising adverts I don't hesitate to push that mute button even if I am not watching the television.

The last time I was patronised by young know it all man technical voice idiot trying to sell me something I didn't want and always using that annoying word powerful I asked "What is in the meaning of power?" He didn't say anything after that, smiled and walked away. That irritated me the most!

Go ahead. I have my preferences on my type of hearing to audio and too much of sharpness is not one of them.

Don't worry, the audio will be no sharper.

Although HD-DVDs only offer 2 Channel audio at 24-bit/192 kHz and Bluray offers 4 Channels of the same quality, they both have 24-bit/96KHz audio when running eight channel.

This is further rubbished by the fact that the vast majority of films are still only mastered in 16-bit/48KHz, and even most of the biggest Hollywood block busters still use only 24-bit/48KHz audio.

So - on the audio front Deepsycher, you have nothing to worry about.

Disney's been attempting to promote Blu-ray all year. It's pitiful, really... wacko.gif

Unfortunately, Blu-Ray is this generation's Beta-Max, for the following reasons:

-Made by Sony
-Technologically better than it's rival
-More expensive
-Guaranteed to fail

I have yet to research further but I usually copy the cds in a wave format to save space. I did that after being bothered from the noise the cd audio cables pick up. I only found one shielded one and a two wire digital unshielded input with no problems but too late now.
