rewind about 10 years or so. its the mid 1990's, and you own a sega genesis. your console is getting some stiff competition from the snes, and other systems at this time..such as the turbo grafx 16, 3d0, cdi, jaguar, and the forth coming sony playstation.

what to do?

sega's answer?..peripherals!

there was the sega cd which sat alongside the genesis and took forever to load games that had poor resolution.

then there was the sega 32x, an oblong mushroom-shaped add-on that snapped right into the genesis' slot, so that 32x games could be played, thus rendering the 16-bit genesis a 32 bit system.

that was then, this is now.

sega doesnt make consoles anymore.

but microsoft does, and their xbox systems seem to conjure up memories of the sega genesis for me.

why?

well, like sega, microsoft seems to be having its own form of such events.

they introduced the xbox in fall of 2001. yes, it can play dvds,.but you need to shell out 30 clams to buy the dvd playback kit.

along comes the 360 and it doesnt have enough storage on its ram...what to do? make a black model with more ram, and call it the elite model.

there are people that own 360 that want to watch hd-dvds..what to do?...bring out an hd-dvd add-on peripheral and charge about 200 bucks for it.

the genesis has 3 different models of the same system: genesis, genesis 2, and the small genesis 3. whereas the xbox itself never had any other models for it, but the 360 has the original model (which looks a lot like an under-the-counter black & decker kitchen appliance), and then the new black elite 360.

are you seeing any connections here between the xbox and the genesis??

Nope. Not a one. It's basically just an X-Box, and Microsoft isn't getting way ahead in technology and getting screwed by 3rd party support like poor SEGA did.

Nintendo had the peripherals going for it for a while recently. Gameboy Advance SP, that goofy GBA-GC link cable, the GB player. Now, *shrug* Microshaft loves to make people pay extra money for features that they should already have (and really do), like that whole DVD player requiring a damned 40$ remote to use, even though the technology is already in the system, and that stuff you mentioned.

Didn't PS2 have a few failed, expensive, "promising" peripherals as well? The ill-fated HDD comes to mind.

the gb player is basically a cousin to the super game boy.
Peter Brady was by far the ugliest Brady kid on the "Brady Bunch". I mean, they were all pretty ugly, and the fact that the Brady dad wanted to always take the boys out on overnight camping trips just a tad bit too often, gave me the creeps.

Although I think the PS3 is like the Atari 5200. Powerful, too expensive, shitty games, etc. In the end lost to the Atari 2600, which was released like years before.

ohhhh,.youre so wrong there!, and that was a really cold blow., not to mention a poor comparison .

a better analogy would be the ps3 to the neo geo. a gaming system deemed to expensive for the general public, only the hard core and elite have one so far.

many forget all sony really needs to do is drop the price of the ps3 by about $100.00 or so, and once sales of it pick up,.sony will have a firm footing in the 7th generation of console wars, not to mention all the blu-ray disc sales they will gain.

ken kutagari obviously lost his touch, and soon as sony realized this, it wasnt before long that he was asked to step down. his replacement by kazuo hirai will only mean new directions taken for sony's ps3.

sony spent a lot of money into the development of the ps3, and they arent about to let the ps3 simply fade away. push-comes-to-shove, they will give the system a sharp price reduction to sale the system at a profit loss,.only to eventually make back the profits within time.

ps3 is here to stay.
