I just returned home from seeing the film "Redline". The movie was great, it was pretty much predictable in the sense of it being a high-octane racing film. But aside from the film itself, I was rather displeased that there really wasnt too much in the way of previews. Summertime is right around the corner, and one would think that films in theatres now would be chock full of advertisements for other films. one would be mistaken.

I really dont know what "governs" the advertisement for how many previews a certain said film is allowed to have. Its my theory that the bigger the budget is for a film that you are currently seeing, the more previews are going to have. I was really hoping to see a preview for the upcoming "Transformers" movie due out on 7/4/07.

I really dont know what films in theatres now have this preview. It seems like certain films have certain previews attached to them. So if I want to see a certain preview for a certain film, then I have to see whatever film has that specific preview for it, regardless if i want to see the film or not. Then again, there is always the internet which carries previews for everything..but I like the mammoth screen and the dolby digital experience,.yadda yadda yadda.

It seems like 10, 15 years ago, you could go to a theatre and see a film and be treated to about a good 20 minutes worth of previews. Recently, it seems like a lot of films dont even have 5 minutes worth of previews anymore. This, of course, sucks if youre running late for a showing, or there is a long ass line at the concession stand.

So, if anyone has the definitive answer to this two-part mystery, please respond.

Just to recap, the two main questions presented here are:

1. Are certain previews only assigned to certain films?

2. Has the amount of previews shown in theatres been reduced in recent years?

1. I am pretty sure that certain previews are assigned to certain films - in that they try to show previews of similar types of movies, ones that the audience for the current movie would be likely to want to see as well.

2. actually, in my observations, previews seem to be increasing in number. granted, I haven't been to the movies much lately so I don't have very many data points.
Head Gunner for the Royal Sloop Crimson Steel, Queen of the Dead, Instigator of Chaos and Confusion, Knight of the Grand Recursive Order of the Lambda Calculus, and also The Non.

Remember Emu's face, people; one day it's going to be on the news alongside a headline about blowing some landmark to smithereens, and then we can all sigh and say, "She was such a normal person".....

It's still common for me to sit through a good 20-30 minutes of previews before a movie starts.

I saw a Transformers preview at the beginning of Night at the Museum, back at the beginning of January.
