this thread is about things omitted from the original star wars trilogy. that is, based upon the initial big screen presentation of each film when it was first released (ANH:1977, ESB:1980, ROTJ:1983), up until now, what are some things that have been removed?.

if you know of anything scene that has been changed, toyed with, altered, removed, reversed, deleted, replaced, etc.

even if a voice over has happened, any change,.no matter how minute,..list it here please.

theres another thread circulating about a purported scream Leia makes in ANH when the torture chamber door slams shut.

Theres the infamous "Han shoots first" scene in ANH, indicating Han shot Greedo. This scene was replaced with Greedo shooting at Han first, and Han countering the fire with a kill.

I'm not going to spend hours upon hours listing every scene I know,.and trying to learn about scenes I never knew of...I will leave that fun to you guys.

What do you mean? He always died in ROTJ. That was never changed...

Since we could literally put up a huge exhaustive list, this is just from memory (changes refer to things added/changed in 1997 unless otherwise noted):

- in 1981, "Episode IV: A New Hope" was inserted into Star Wars's opening crawl, and the text was re-arranged to remove most instances of one word at the end of a line and "Rebel" is capitalized in the middle of a sentence now.

- Mono mix of Star Wars (1977) has Threepio give a little speech about the tractor beam. This is missing from most other versions of Star Wars until 2004, when it is re-inserted.

- "Shotgun" or "357 magnum" effects from the blaster rifles in the "swinging across the chasm" scene in Star Wars. Present in the 1977 mono version and the 1997 SE, but all other versions use the regular blaster sound effects from the rest of the movie(s).

- Some VHS editions of ESB (pre-SE) in full frame, for some reason showed the TIE fighters firing BLUE lasers at the Falcon during the asteroid chase scene. This must have been some kind of mastering error.

- A missing credit from 1997 ROTJ SE at the end was re-inserted in the home video releases (and presumably is there in the 2004 version as well).

- Scene of Biggs and Red Leader talking to Luke before they fly off to fight the Death Star inserted, using stock footage from 1997. There is a cut to remove some of Red Leader's dialog, with a "deck hand" carrying some hoses walking in front of the camera to clumsily hide the cut. Lines removed talked about Red Leader meeting Luke's father when he was just a boy and how if Luke had half his father's skill he'd do all right. (note: other scenes of Biggs talking to Luke were NEVER shown in theaters, though they were filmed and appeared in the picture book, radio drama, novel and as deleted scenes on "Behind the Magic" cd-rom in 1998, they have yet to be inserted into the movies).

- In 1997, the opening "Lucasfilm" and "20th century fox" logos replaced by newer computer generated ones. ending credits altered to include special edition credits and James Earl Jones given voice credit in all three films.

- Death Star and Alderaan explosions altered and given big "magic rings" around them. in 2004, color sucked out of Death Star explosion in ANH.

- In 2004 editions, "A long time ago in a galaxy far far away" text replaced to match the prequels (that all used the same turquoise font, the original movies varied in font/size and color)

- Montage of "planetary celebrations" added to ROTJ with flute music, and extra shots of Ewoks playing on horns and Wedge and Lando hugging (iirc). Shots of Naboo added later still and the Senate building and Jedi Temple inserted into the added Coruscant shots

- Hayden Christiansen's face pasted onto Sebastian Shaw's body as the ghost of Anakin in 2004.

- lightsabers altered in 2004 ANH. lightsaber blades are made thinner with thicker white cores and brighter primary colors (which they screwed up so they change from shot to shot, making formerly blue sabers into green or red into purple, violet, etc; blue into purple when they clash with red). In the shot of Vader having the blast doors closed in front of him his formerly white saber is re-colored red and a far shot of him is recolored red, but a few other frames they forgot to fix. A shot where Obi-Wan's lightsaber "fizzles out" has been fixed, but they only added the outer glow, forgetting the core color, so it still looks a bit off, a bit too "square" at the end.

- Boba Fett's voice dubbed over with Temura Morrison in 2004

- Clive Revill dubbed over and the hooded old woman replaced with a new "hologram" of Ian McDiarmand in his 2004 Episode III makeup with new dialog. Also Vader's "Yes, my master" removed, new Vader line added "How is that possible"

- Vader's ANH Voice re-tooled to sound more like ESB and ROTJ

- CG X-Wings/TIEs inserted into the Yavin/Death Star space battle, with CG backgrounds and things, often replacing old shots

- "He's on your tail" added in 1997, removed in 2004 to Yavin battle

- Luke screams (copy 'n' pasted Emperor scream from ROTJ) in 1997, removed again in 2004

- "Wolfman" and "Hyenaman" in the mos eisley cantina replaced by a two sided mask (one side looks like an elephant, the other like a frog/dinosaur smoking a pipe) in each shot.

- numerous shots of "ronto" dinosaurs and smaller little compies inserted into Mos Eisley. New CG shots of Mos Eisley extending it, with little ships flying around, floating "security droids," swoop riders, the Outrider, slapstick droids and circus jawas added.

- blaster hits to the chests of Imperial officers/commandos censored (frames deleted so it looks like they just smoke and fall over instead of seeing a bright flare/blast hole). They missed one of course.

- 2004 extension of the "light at the end of the tunnel" matte painting effect in the Death Star cell block scenes

- 2004 Dianoga eye stalk modified to look more reptilian and "blink"

- 2004 Death Star tractor beam readout altered from english to "Aurabesh" lettering. A tiny bit of english text on the Death Star screen in the scene where Tarkin, Vader and co. are standing around in the background is changed to aurabesh as well.

- Jabba the Hutt inserted into ANH in 1997 and gets his tail stepped on in archival footage. Boba Fett is also inserted for the first time into the stock footage and mugs for the camera. In 2004, CG Jabba is replaced by a newer CG Jabba re-colored from TPM.

- Greedo shoots in 1997. In 2004 they both shoot close to the same time. The original shot of Greedo facing the camera and getting blown away in a blast of smoke and sparks is removed in both cases. In 1997, Han saying "Yes" before he says "I'll bet you have" was removed. In 2004, it was restored again.

- Various lines replaced in 1997... "You're lucky you don't taste very good" becomes "You were lucky to get out of there" (ESB), "It's all right, trust me!" replaced by "It's all right, I can see a lot better" (ROTJ), "Check this side of the street, it's secure, move onto the next one" replaced by "the door's locked, move onto the next one" (ANH)

- "Close the blast doors!" added before "open the blast doors, open the blast doors" (ANH)

- "There's no one here" inserted into stormtroopers searching the Falcon scene in 2004 ANH. "We've stopped" added as Threepio line to R2 on the Sandcrawler also in 2004.

- Stormtroopers being chased by Han Solo into a dead end corridor replaced in 1997 by them coming to a room filled with TIE Fighters and Stormtroopers. Return fire as Han runs away increased.

- Approach shots to the Death Star in ANH replaced by CG that shows more ships (and all the X-Wings are the same model with the same FX guy used as the model for the head of the pilot inside!).

- In 2004, one shot of R2 in ANH (or was it ESB?) re-colored with blue "digital paint" that isn't quite accurate to the original model. Other shots they forget to replace (where R2 had black domes).

- Shot of Alderaan's moon when first seen after the crawl modified in either 1993 or 1997 (compare the 2006 "theatrical" DVD with pre-1997 Laserdiscs of ANH)

- Sound effect of the Slave-I's engine in ESB replaced to match the sound in "Attack of the Clones" as it chases the Falcon

- 2004 Leia's hologram modified. Formerly it had horizontal scanlines on it, now it has vertical scanlines. Other 2004 holograms modified (ROTJ) and force ghosts (Obi-Wan in ROTJ) to show more color and be less glowy blue.

- 2004 colors all messed up. Lots of blue tinted shots, inconsistent lightsabers, overall darker picture, blaster bolts and sabers messed up, lose definition. Natural film grain digitally lessened/removed from all three movies, bringing out the flaws in the old CG, the clunkiness of the props and matte paintings and the obvious matte boxes around ships and other objects.

- 1997, new "sunset" digital matte painting added with a pan down to the shot of R2 going through that canyon in ANH.

- Far off shot of model sandcrawler replaced in 1997 with more detailed close up model that emphasizes the size better.

- Shot of the sandcrawler parked and Owen & Luke going over to talk with the Jawa traders modified to "extend" the crawler and show more moisture farm machines (which disappear in subsequent shots).

- 2004 ANH sounds messed up. "tape hiss" for Leia's lines, reversed stereo channels, music drowned out during trench run ("cut across the access and draw their fire.." on the English/Spanish tracks but not French track).

- shadows and man seen on sail barge deck in ROTJ redone with CG.

- "heat shimmer" removed from bottom of landspeeders and replaced with new digital shadows

- cockpits slightly less transparent for snowspeeders in battle of hoth and "tow cable" replaced by CG to be a little easier to see

- second digital "hatch" added to Falcon in ESB when Lando is going up to rescue Luke

- wall tiles in Cloud City replaced by "windows" to see elevators and buildings outside (though they forget to replace them in subsequent shots, creating continuity errors)

- background buildings in Cloud City replaced by CG. New Falcon entry into the city with cloud cars and buildings added, completely CG. Second fly through of city inserted to replace previous shot before it zooms in on Leia and Han inside a room.

- new guy in Wampa costume added eating a dead taun taun and howling after his arm is cut off in the wampa cave scenes in ESB

- matte lines of Rancor cleaned and color corrected to improve the realism of the scene in 2004

- new shots of the actress playing Oola falling into the Rancor pit and screaming in 1997.

- in 1997 her nipple (when her breast slips out of her costume as Jabba pulls her towards him)was digitally erased. In 2004 it's back again. New shot added composited of Oola and Jabba that weren't previously together in the same shot.

- New shots inserted of Boba Fett walking around (filmed for 1997) in Jabba's palace and flirting with newly inserted dancing girls

- "Lapti Nek" music number removed and replaced with "Jedi Rocks" with new CG creatures replacing old ones and new creatures that were never there before inserted along with new costumed actors (guy on drums, harmonica playing alien, singing Yazzum, dancing girls/backup singers, etc) only a few shots of the original band remain in that scene and one stray background shot of puppet Sy Snootles ("Miss Snooty").

- hangar that holds the falcon (ANH) is modified to look more like the one on the ROTJ Death Star II with CG (1997)

- Vader's "Bring my Shuttle" replaced by "alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival" in 1997 (using unused dialog from ANH, modified to sound more like Vader's voice in ESB) and the old shot of him leaving Cloud City replaced by a far off shot of him walking a bridge with troops to a shuttle, the shuttle leaving the Star Destroyer, picking him up, Vader looking out the window recycled from ROTJ, and an unused alternate take of Vader walking onto the Death Star II with dialog muted out to simulate Vader walking onto the Executor in ESB (whew!).

- In 1997, shot of the far off lights (representing the ships) taking off of Yavin IV replaced by close ups of the CG ships slowly lifting off. The shot of Yavin's red planet in the sky has now (2004) been replaced with a CG planet that looks much smaller and more obscured by clouds.

- 2004, ANH's shot of the twin suns setting has been modified. Now the lightning/color more closely matches previous/subsequent shots and the second sun (on the right) previously was partially obscured by a mountain, now the mountain is gone so it glows bright red/orange unobstructed.

- New shots of 1997 filmed stormtroopers with binoculars, etc and a CG stormtrooper riding a CG Dewback inserted right before the "Look sir Droids" moment. Background model dewbacks modified to open their mouths and turn their heads to roar. Dewback standing outside the Mos Eisley cantina also modified in this way (ANH SE).

- CG stormtrooper inserted into footage where Threepio says "I don't like the look of this" also in ANH, getting off of the CG Dewback he was riding.

- 2004 or 1997 (don't remember), echo effect when Luke says "I think we took a wrong turn" and Leia replied modified to sound more realistic as they come to that chasm.

- extra men standing on the left and right sides of the foreground as the heroes enter the hall to get their medals were cardboard cutouts. They've been replaced by real extras in 1997 (ANH).

- new shots of people stopping in the halls to listen and crowds outside in a CG city listening, newly created and inserted when Lando is telling everyone to leave Cloud City over the microphone (originally it just cut to R2D2 as it does later with his little port arm dealy). 1997 ESB.

- CG Falcon takes off from docking bay 94 as CG stormtroopers continue shooting at it as it lifts off from Mos Eisley (1997, ANH). Subsequent shot is modified so that Falcon goes at more of an angle and we see the camera pan up.

- Shot of Falcon going past some planet was modified as they head towards Yavin IV (ANH 1997). A digital falcon added flying in the sky over Yavin IV with the jungle background.

- Digital matte painting replacing obviously fake matte painting of the Yavin Temple, and a new moving door added (ANH, 1997).

- Shot of the Falcon flying in to save Luke's bacon ("Yee hooo!") at the end of ANH modified to have a close up of the Falcon flying out of the sun in a much more dramatic fashion (ANH 1997).

- ships flying away from the Death Star (ANH) modified so they are going at more of an angle with new CG ships. (ANH 1997)

PS: Leia doesn't scream after the door closes on the "torture droid". She never did.. not in any version of the movie ever released!

In a rare German cut of Star Wars, Vader's TIE fighter gets blown up in the trench run after getting smacked by his wingman's ship. Also, in this same cut, Leia apparently spits on Vader, in an alternate Tantive IV confrontation scene copied word-for-word into the novelization. At least, that's what I heard from the Force.net boards. blushing.gif

Also, Boba Fett isn't mugging for the camera in ANH; he's scanning the area to make sure nobody jumps from behind an engine coil with a blaster and starts shooting at Jabba. Honestly, Jabba's his employer; he's bound to make sure no one's going to go bonkers on him. rolleyes.gif

I figure he's scanning to make sure no Fett fanboys in the audience rush the stage and attempt to mate with the screen... blink.gif

Targeted marketing!

As for those changes, sounds a little too different to have been in any existing cut and not weird enough for something like Turkish Star Wars, so I'm calling BS on that one. TFN surely has some weird folks on the forums!

Now the whole "Exorcist face" Leia almost gets was real, but this other stuff? No way.

I have to hand a big galactic kudos to Kurgan X for his research.

One thing that I always remember in the older versions of ESB, is that you could see right thru the black bars that supported the windshield of the fighters that were flying over Hoth.

I still have a VHS copy of ESB from around 1983-ish. Its the only copy of any star wars movie that I know hasnt been toyed with too much by Lucas and his almightly effects team.

More changes:

Cleaned up film. Basically the film quality is very sharp and nice looking in all three films,
albeit somewhat dark in places (noticable in ANH especially).

A New Hope

*In the "entry into Mos Eisley" the initial shot of the landspeeder from the back with R2 on
top and Threepio hanging on was replaced by CGI in 1997. It was modified again in 2004 to
make it look a bit more realistic. The 1997 edition added a pinkish hue to the extended Mos
Eisley scenes, which the 2004 version fixed (one of the rare times the new editions actually
fixed color instead of making it WORSE)

*the really ugly looking shot of the red astromech droid as the landspeeder passes by in the
entry to Mos Eisley has been cleaned up a lot in 2004 from its original version. This was
the same kind of cleanup done that removed the little "heat shimmer" underneath the
landspeeders. The shadows were also digitalized and look a bit more realistic.

*In 1997, the shot of Obi-Wan's simple home with the landspeeder was replaced with a digital
shot of the home from far off on a cliff side with smoke coming out of the chimney.

*In 1997, when Obi-Wan is talking about the "hive of scum and villiany" and we see a shot
far off of Mos Eisley spaceport, it has been modified to look a little more detailed and has
some tiny CG ships taking off, etc.

Sound:

(not sure about this one:)

* According to DVDAnswers.com in the seen where the Imperial Officer is asking
why "TK-421" isn't at his post (right before the "bad transmitter" line) there is some
barely audible static, to indicate the damaged helmet (likely from when the officer
inside was killed by Han Solo to get his uniform). (2004 edition)

* The "Kraytr Dragon Call" that Obi-Wan makes to scare off the Tuskens who are attacking
Luke sounds different. Now it's more of a whooping sound in addition to the first part being
the same (hard to explain). It doesn't sound like a beast roar anymore, rather like some
alien bird. The "old roar" was actually a slightly modified version of the Dewback roar,
incidentally (which could have been rationalized in-universe, but nevermind). (2004 edition)

Empire Strikes Back:

A new line from Luke saying "thanks Threepio" (after Threepio says "It's no nice to see
you fully functional again") inserted, which matches the screenplay. (2004 edition)

* A subtle change, but in a scene where Vader is on the right side of the screen with his
back to us, and two Imperial officers are talking on his right/our left (one of them a very
young one) the rank insignias are correct. In earlier versions they were flipped (on the
wrong sides of their uniforms). It looks like at least two shots like this were fixed, but there
could be more of them... (2004 edition)

* Han Solo's "Jacket" removed: In a couple of closeup frames when Han is being readied
for the carbonite treatment he appears to be wearing his trademark black vest (instead of
just the off-white shirt). From behind-the-scenes footage, it's clear that the "jacket" was just
a trick of shadows playing off his otherwise white shirt in the scene. In any case, in the 2004
Edition these areas have been color matched to the rest of his shirt so there's no trace of
a "jacket."

Return of the Jedi:

*Anakin unmasked has his eyebrows digitally erased, and thanks to the goofed up colors his skin looks GRAY (which creates a continuity problem with ESB 2004, which shows the back of his exposed head to be a pinkish hue, and Episode III which matches that).

*Herd of banthas inserted into the scene in the desert right before the Sail Barges come into view for the Sarlaac scenes.

*CG "beak" (little shop of horrors style) and extra tentacles added to the Sarlaac. This means Boba Fett actually gets snapped up into the mouth before the "burp" scene (the burp was always there, btw). It also makes extra little high pitched noises when the tentacle gets shot by Han and when it first comes out of the big "mouth" iirc.

*I can't really tell, but supposedly in the shot after the Falcon escapes the DS2 "fireball" we see the ships fleeing to the surface of Endor. In 1997, they were supposedly modified to actually be decreasing in size (as if they were really moving) instead of just moving the background to simulate it.

*During the space battle, a group of ships are moving around in the background and suddenly vanish. IIrc, seeing it in the theater in 1997, they light up and flashed away, as if they were blown up. I don't know if this was modified again in 2004, but I'd have to be watching for it.

Also, several "matte edges" (not garbage matte boxes, mind you) in ANH, ESB and ROTJ were cleaned up, especially around the Falcon and the "training remote" that Luke uses onboard the Falcon. Most of these were barely noticeable before and could be chalked up to shadows or something, but they're gone in 2004.

Also a note that there are some other little differences between the Mono soundtrack of Star Wars and the stereo or six channel stereo versions shown in other theaters, and the audio mixes of the home editions. In some versions of ANH for example Luke says "Blast it WEDGE, where are you" instead of the usual "Blast it BIGGS where are you" (incidentally the 2006 edition follows the Mono Mix in using "Biggs," though which was the "original version" is up for grabs, since while most theaters got the mono mix, the six channel version with the 70mm one was actually released first).

In the mono version, Aunt Beru's voice is different, it's slightly deeper and a little more "old lady" sounding. You'll note in all the subsequent versions with her new smoother voice, that her lips don't quite match up with her lines as they used to!

It's claimed that the wide release of Star Wars removed the shot of Chewbacca scaring the "mouse droid" on the Death Star, but that it was present in the original screening and then in all home versions and the special edition. This is a popular claim, but apparently there's no evidence that it exists, and the music matches up perfectly, so now there's doubts that it was ever cut from any release. From listening to the mono soundtrack (with no picture) it sounds like this part is still in there, so at least in '77 it was being shown in theaters.

It's a real deleted scene, where it was supposed to show us the aftermath of Leia's interrogation. She's hanging upside down and here eyes are all red and yellow (not unlike the "Sith eyes" we see later in the movies). I think this was replaced by the "aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper" thing.

Originally it was planned to have Chewbacca have to carry an unconscious Leia on his back as they escaped, but I guess they figured the scene was a little too gruesome and cumbersome to film (they did the back carrying thing in episode iii though!).

There used to be a photo of Carrie Fisher hanging upside down with weird eyes posted on StarWarz.com for the deleted scenes, but I can't find it there anymore. Needless to say it was never featured in any version of the movies shown in theaters.

From T-Bone's Star Wars Universe:

There has been a long standing rumor floating around for years about a scene that was reportedly filmed where Leia was hung upside-down by Vader and extensively tortured. This would have been from A NEW HOPE while Leia was in the Detention Block.

Veteran Cut Scene fanatic Ryan Silva helped with debunking this old rumor. Here is the entry from the "Debunk" section of his old Lost Scenes web-site:

A friend of mine was just telling me about the Leia-Vader torture scene. She said that she was reading an interview with Carrie Fisher, and in the article she described the scene as the most awful day of filming on the set. She described the scene in very much the same way it was portrayed in the [NPR] radio drama. She described being hung upside down while they filmed her being tortured until she eventually passed out. She then noted how pissed she was when she saw that it had been cut from the movie.

From ROLLING STONE, issue no. 322, July 24th, 1980: p. 35. Carrie Fisher Interview:

"...Fisher laments the fact that several exotic scenes never made it into either film. 'In the original script, I was captured, and when Mark and Harrison found me, I was hanging upside down with yellow eyes, like in THE EXORCIST. They shoulda just gotten Linda Blair for it. Some form of radar torture was done to me and I was in a beam, bruised and beaten up, suspended in midair. The reason it was cut from the film was because I was unconscious and the Wookie[e] would have had to carry me for, like, the next fifteen minutes. But I loved the idea of having yellow eyes and being beaten and carried.'"

The torture scene Carrie Fisher remembers reading about WAS NOT FILMED. That scene is part of the 3rd Draft by Lucas. She hangs upside down with yellow eyes, and Chewbacca must carry her for about 10 scenes onwards. Of course, this scene is NOT in the shooting script, the 4th Draft.

So, no dice. sleep.gif
