"classic" DVDs kick us while we're down, whydoncha

So the so-called "classic" DVD set will only have the Special Edition desecrations of the original trilogy. And it will have an extensive behind the scenes preview of episode 3 as a bonus feature. Shudder! That's reason enough not to buy it. I know you don't HAVE to watch it, but any mention or reference to the prequels completely ruins the suspension of disbelief I need to enjoy the original films.
But I wouldn't have gotten the DVDs anyway--I can't handle the Special Edition.
When will someone come along and release the ORIGINAL trilogy? Let's have a pool for when that happens... I say it will, but not until we are all dead. (The great thing is that if even if I win, I lose!)

I feel your pain, Laura. What the hell was George Lucas thinking when he announced to the world that he would never release the original theatrical versions of the classic trilogy on DVD? And how did he manage to escape the studio alive?
George Lucas seems to always be abandoning the original fans for a younger demographic who have no idea about Star Wars. What he doesn't acknowledge is that without the original fans, he wouldn't be where he is now. That's right - no money, no Skywalker Ranch, no ability to create his own films anymore. He owes a lot to people like us and yet he has no problems with royally screwing us.
But the other problem is that he is going to let the original films disappear into obscurity where they will never be able to be viewed again. These are cinema classics, great names that stand the test of time and are among the greatest films ever made (well, with the exception of Return of the Jedi of course. Although that commercial piece of crap now looks like high art when compared to the prequels).
My real question is - can George really do this? Does he have the final say on whether we can watch the original trilogy on DVD without seeing the botched up dodgy Special Editions? Because, while he has the rights to the new films (and he's welcome to them!), I would have thought that Twentieth Century Fox owned the rights to the original trilogy. And if they're not going to release the original version of the trilogy then they're a bunch of fools as well.
A true DVD edition of the original trilogy would reap in more money than these guys could possibly imagine (even if they can already imagine quite a bit). But speaking for myself, I wouldn't touch the Special Edition DVD set with an eighty foot pole.
In the meantime, I'm not hanging out waiting for 20th Century Fox or George Lucas to do the smart thing and release the classic trilogy in its unspoilt glory. Thank God, we've still got the videos at home.

I suggest a formal boycott.
I further suggest that any person or persons who willingly spend $10 to see the third movie, when they have not experienced an ounce of enjoyment with its predecessors, fully expect to be equally insulted by third, feel anger and resentment towards everyone involved in the production, and are not members of the press (web press possibly included), lack a certain measure of strength of character.

I think the applicable phrase here is, "Don't knock it till you've tried it."
Along those lines, it is necessary that we see the film in order to not only bitch but bitch in the most informed ways possible.

Unforutnately this will have about as much effect as an online petition: none.
It's been known now for about six months that Lucas has no intention of letting the OT appear in its original form on DVD. I would love it if you could simply toggle between the original and the special edition. With DVD technology this would be incredibly easy. However, this won't happen seeing that Lucas refuses to believe the OT ever existed in its original form. We now have to live with him rewriting history so that Greedo shoots first.

ROFL please, you know you'll be in line like the rest of us dickheads when that shit drops in September. No reason to put up a front.
Guest, you clearly have never met Laura. If she says she isn't buying it, she isn't buying it.

Jesus H Christ. If you'er gonna let a fuckin preview ruin a trilogy for you, then you're an old geezer that's forgotten how to just watch a movie. Period.
What? "Old Geezer"? She 18!

Obviously I have to see the third movie. It's my duty to you all. However I know there are a lot of chuckleheads out there (who hated the first two) that are actually thinking the third one may be "better" or even "good." I'm not that naiive.

I'd like to see the third movie. I have no idea what it's going to be like, I'm not expecting anything brilliant (as I have been given no reason to)... and if it sucks as much as Episode I and Episode II, then that's gotta be worth a look.
Before I read Chefelf's reasons to hate Episode I and Episode II, I was sorry that I had seen these movies. But by knowing about all those points he referred to, I got to have a great laugh. I know it doesn't sound good but I think we're all guilty of this... paying out on crap is great fun. And I'm sure Episode III won't disappoint us on this front.

Can't wait 'til Civilian sees *this*
L O fucking L, my friend.
I have actually enjoyed my AOTC experience, even though I never saw the piece of garbage. It's pretty neat gleaning info about the film from the pop cultue, and then from things said here. I really loved hearing about Dooku's space-sailboat two years after the film's release. Just when I thought it couldn't get any dumber!
I say no-one see it, Chefelf included. Or see it only if you can get in for free (I will not see it if I can get in for free). Let's not take any guff from those swine.
PS: anyone who buys those SPed DVDs is an asshole. Anyone who buys them and then bitches about them is an idiot as well. Good for you, Laura. Good for you.

Agreed. I think we're all in too deep now. Only way out of this horror is through it.
