Dylan a False 'Prophet,' Says Pope Benedict
Current Pope Did Not Want John Paul to See Singer in 1997

VATICAN CITY (March 8) - Pope Benedict was opposed to Bob Dylan appearing at a youth event with the late Pope John Paul in 1997 because he considered the pop star the wrong kind of "prophet," Benedict writes in a new book issued on Thursday.

Benedict, who was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger at the time of the concert in Bologna, Italy, makes the disclosure in a new book of memoirs about his predecessor, who died in 2005.

"There was reason to be skeptical, -- I was, and in a certain sense I still am, -- to doubt if it was really right to let these types of prophets intervene," Benedict writes, only mentioning Dylan among the stars who appeared.

At the 1997 concert, Dylan, the anti-conformist troubadour of the 1960s and one of the 20th century's greatest influences on popular music, sang three songs before the Pope as part of a concert that included a number of other, mostly Italian artists.

Dylan sang "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," his 1960s anti-war classic "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," and "Forever Young," a song of hope and courage.

In his new book, Pope Benedict does not explain why he does not like Bob Dylan or why he considers him a false "prophet."

Benedict is a lover of classical and sacred music, and an accomplished classical pianist. Last year, he canceled the Vatican's traditional fund-raising Christmas concert, which was a magnet for pop stars.

Dylan, born Robert Zimmerman into a middle-class Jewish family in Minnesota, has been at times agnostic, Jewish and a born-again Christian during his musical career.

At the 1997 concert, John Paul referred to what is perhaps Dylan's most famous song, "Blowing in the Wind," which became an anthem for young people seeking meaning in life in the 1960s.

John Paul told the crowd of some 300,000 young Italian Catholics that the answer was indeed "in the wind" -- but not in the wind that blew things away, rather "in the wind of the spirit" that would lead them to Christ.

After Dylan sang, he took off his beige cowboy hat and went up to a podium to greet John Paul.

Benedict's new book, called "John Paul II, My Beloved Predecessor," is mostly a reflection on John Paul's personality and his religious writings.

To be fair, all youth in Nazi Germany were required to be in Hitler Youth.

Oh yes, and he escaped, risking the firing squad...

What a bastard.

But choosing a crappy and unoriginal name like 'Benedict' shows he has no judgment anyway.

Personally, I couldn't care less what Darth Pope thinks about Bob Dylan, or did think before he was Pope.

Heh. Catholic Christians. Nuff said.

But Benedict is actually a good choice of name, gives you a pretty clear impression of what's going through Mr. Ratzinger's head.

I don't think you people know much about Church politics. There's a lot of things Benedict is doing right, and he knows why. Then again, you might not think the Catholic Church needs to cleaned up and get a lot more strict.

I don't know anything about RCC Politics, and nothing of the pope--apart from people like to either ignorantly or misleadingly quote him on being in Hitler Youth, and he has a bad name, that fifteen other men chose.

I don't think the RCC, where you can apologize for everything anyway, needs any stricting up.

And the Bible isn't the Constitution--it can't be amended, it can't be changed. So what is the Pope doing? What religious, moral power does the Pope have?

I'll get the quote for you if you want (over the weekend) but the catholic handbook suggests, in a rather blasphemous manner, that the pope outranks God on some occassions, AND I've posted somewhere before that the three official latin titles of the office of pope contain roman numerals that add to 666.

the catholic church is the real great satan.

"ignorantly or misleadingly quote him on being in Hitler Youth"

fact: he was in the hitler youth.

whether or not he wanted to be is irrelevant, i was making a funny, which i followed up with another funny.

in what way was i being ignorant or misleading?

my suguestion was that by comparison I never heard him refer to Hitler as a 'false prophet' and the term is, religiouly speaking, quite an insult and accusation. By calling Dylan a false prophet he is suggesting the man is gather of souls by satanic design to lure masses from salvation.

mentioning that he was third riech boy scout hardly seems as bad....

either way, for choice of pope, they should have chosen the paedophile... at least he was good with kids.

Barend, my man, I realize you were joking, and you followed it with a joke.

I do also realize that many people aren't making jokes. And these people are wrong. I'm not a very tactful person, I'd outright tell you if I took issue with you. wink.gif

And the ignorance is from people who don't know he didn't want to be.

And the misleadingness is from people who do know, but don't mention it.

Barend, you are neither ignorant nor misleading, because you are not the only person that could be referred to as 'people.'

That's what would make the thread 'edgy' and 'entertaining'.

In his new book, Pope Benedict does not explain why he does not like Bob Dylan or why he considers him a false "prophet."

Perhaps he should let us know why
he thinks Bob Dylan is a prophet.
Becuase the definition of a
prophet doesn't really apply to him.

It seems to me the His Holiness is
just trying to cause a media firestorm
to re-intrest the non-Catholic community
in the Church goings.

There have been ALOT of blasphemous
spewings for the Pope and Popes of the past
But whats really intresting is the
book of Revelations states (and i'm paraphrasing)
that a false form religion will arise

that will lead millions down the wrong path

and the council/leaders will were red.
Thats a little specfic but anyone seen
a Catholic Cardinal lately?
Now i'm not saying we all go carazy set
fire to RC Churches its just sumthing to ponder.
