I was pondering the welcome thread, and recently Aeris from FFVII was mentioned, and I started wondering... How did they get away with permanently killing her off, when characters are mutliated and eradicated all of the time, only to be instantly revived via a relatively easy to aquire item? Where is the phoenix down during cutscenes? Is there some magical metagame rule that cutscenes are allowed to break the regular rules of the came to further plot/add drama? Do some characters somehow get only mostly dead during regular battles and dead dead in cut scenes? This sort of thing frequently happens in RPGs and the like. Why can't you toss a phoenix down or get a decent-level cleric to ressurect your hero when he/she dies? This bothers me.

As for FF, characters whose HPs drop to zero are only at the brink of death, unconscious. Therefore, Aerith' death was only in so far a storytelling flaw, as this little piece of information is mostly only known to the learned hardcore gamers. And please don't ask me why I know this. pinch.gif

Most other RPGs rely on the good ol' attachment of the hero's soul and life-energy to his body, therefore, if there's noone close to take care of them immediately, they're gone for good, as the connection between these two parts quickly weakens.

... still, most RPGs just forget about these simple rules. So let's just say that the emotional shock was so overwhelming, that they simply forgot about that wagon full of phoenix downs they brought along.

In the original Japanese version, there's a quest which, when completed, enables you to revive Aerith, if I recall correctly. This was removed from the exported version.

Nope, that's just another myth that emerged when people didn't know what to do with the Underwater Materia.

It's been bothering me how, in Fable, your character seems to be the only one that knows what to do with those mysterious Resurrection Phials. You can escape death constantly, but no one else seems to realize how useful those little buggers can be.
I am writing about Jm in my signature because apparently it's an effective method of ignoring him.

It's a bit odd that resurrection is generally limited to the protagonists. Though there are occasionally exceptions, such as Tazok showing up in Baldurs Gate 2. Of course that game also had the same flaw of allowing the resurrection of Imoen.

In FFT, they have a character clearly KO'd by Worker 8, and someone quickly calls for a phoenix down. So I don't think they actually raise the dead. They also only seem to work on the recently "dead", making them more of a revivication item than a resurrection item.

Also, Sephiroth has a big sword.

And remember Planescape: Torment?

How could I forget? But the Nameless One had a good reason for returning to life as well as raising others.

Pity I got too bored with that game to continue and find out more about the plot.

I need to get back to playing it! School's been getting in the way of much of everything lately, though.

Well, everybody I've recommended it to has given up fairly early into the game, so to be honest I wasn't too surprised when you stopped playing Slade.

I think the answer youre looking for in regards to Final Fantasy titles, is one that is sometimes often overlooked. Each Final Fantasy title is unique from the next..whether it be the storyline, characters, magic/battle systems, etc.

Perhaps the abiliites that are well known to revive members in other FF titles are NOT fully available to all characters at all given times. Yes, I know Phoenix Down is available in FFVII, but due to certain circumstances unexplained, it could have been that Sephiroth somehow prohibited Aeris (or others) from gaining access to it withing reasonable time.....(on the other hand,.it could have been just a continuity storyline flaw from a Squaresoft developer...oh geesh,.what could be the remote possibilities of that being the case???)

Sometimes I wonder why I've been typing all of this somewhere up there in this thread...

I think that answer is a copout. tongue.gif

Sime: I didn't give up, I just got distracted by schoolwork and other games and it got stuck in the queue somewhere. It'll get out eventually, even though I shake my fist at the 2.0 rules. THAC0 indeed. pinch.gif I enjoy the voice acting, particularly the lovable Rob Paulsen as Morte.

I would never have picked that up, but then I never had the chance to watch Animaniacs (damn schedualling). I did though recognise Jennifer Hale as Fall from Grace and Deionarra. But the real surprise is the voice of Nordom is the same guy who does Homer Simpson.
