I have absolutely no problem with older English. I suppose more of the root of my discomfort is that it's this one older term juxtaposed into a very "contemporary" English book, and it's already awkward due to the deadly/deathly dissonance. It's just a bit funky and not to my liking.

Sorry to be a nitpick, but it's Deathly Hallows, not hollows.

Ooops. No, go ahead, nitpick away. After all, I was being a prat in that post, and had it coming.

The thing that bugs me the most about this is, that "deathly" obviously contains one of those "th"s, which are - surprisingly - not very friendly towards a German tongue. I'd rather say deadly, that's fairly easy to accomplish. sad.gif

Yep, everybody is right about Hagrid's expulsion. I forgot about that one - just because he didn't do it doesn't mean he wasn't expelled for it.

I like Deathly Hallows for exactly the reasons everybody is discussing it. Nobody knows what it is supposed to mean, or be about. That's the way it's supposed to be.

Akhem. I must point out something about the word deathly. It is not so terribly archaic as you might think. Here is an example:

Deathly pale: You are as pale as death
Deadly pale: You are so pale it could kill someone. What?

Theres one use. Deathly cold or deathly still would also work.

That's true, good point. But I still don't think it works very well for the word "Hallows." Maybe it will all be explained, but as of right now, it's awkward.

Could anyone from the native English-speaking community please explain to me what sort of semantic construction is DEATHLY? Is it just a word with no connection to noun "death" at all? (because if it is, should it not be "deadly") What could tha author mean?

Also: who bets that Harry Potter dies at the end of the book?
Another question: who is still interested enough in the series to even bother to think of it, let alone answer?

Since I'm too lazy to go back through the whole thread, I'm just gonna answer this -

1) No idea what the semantic construction of DEATHLY is or what connection it has with the noun "death".

2) Harry probably will die, which kind of sucks since life's already depressing enough as it is.

3) I've been in a love/hate relationship with the series for a while now, so it'll feel good to finally have it over and done with.

I suppose coming back to the root of the structure the title doesn't make a lot of sense when th two words are put together. We've already discussed the use ofthe word "deathly", but what about it's placement against the word "hallows". The definitions I have for this are as follows:

1. To make or set apart as holy. (possibly more used for hallowed but I'll leave it for now)
2. To respect or honor greatly; revere.

Deathly "set apart holy stuff" doesn't really work.

Deathly "honor" or "Revere" again not really making a whole lot of sense to me.

I guess we will just have to wait and see how it works in with the actions within the book I suppose.

Hallows probably refers to a place, since "deathly" is a adjective and adjectives modify nouns. Or, as I think it's already been mentioned, it might refer to the Horcruxes, which are sort of the antithesis of a holy item.

I've discussed this 'Hallows' matter
with my top secret Harry Potter Tribunal/Council

and we have decided that floppydisk

has the most potential at being correct.
Fore we too believe it has to do with the Horcruxes.

Yeah and as such I'm siding with Spoony. I think she's the one that's right!

I'd like to repeat that the next HP book will suck no matter what it's called. The last two sucked; the next one, since it is continuing the same story from the last two, will suck by default.

I will buy it the day it comes out and read it non-stop in one sitting, just to see how badly it sucks.
