Activist to zoo: Wrong to save baby polar bear

Comments fuel debate over whether humans should raise abandoned cub

BERLIN - Berlin Zoo's abandoned polar bear cub Knut looks cute, cuddly and has become a front-page media darling, but an animal rights activist insists it was wrong to intervene and save the cub.

"Feeding by hand is not species-appropriate but a gross violation of animal protection laws," animal rights activist Frank Albrecht was quoted as saying by the mass-circulation Bild daily, which has featured regular photo spreads tracking fuzzy Knut's frolicking.

"The zoo must kill the bear."

When Knut — or "Cute Knut," as the 19 pound bear has become known — was born last December, his mother ignored him and his brother, who later died. Zoo officials intervened, choosing to raise the cub themselves.

The story prompted quick condemnations from the zoo, politicians and other animal rights groups.

"The killing of an animal has nothing to do with animal protection," said Wolfgang Apel, head of the German Federation for the Protection of Animals.

Greens politician Undine Kurth called the suggestion "fully unacceptable." Petra Pau of the opposition Left Party invoked the widely-reported case of an Italian bear dubbed "Bruno" that wandered last year into southern Germany, only to be killed by hunters at the behest of local authorities worried about residents and livestock.

"Berlin is not Bavaria, therefore it will be better for Knut than Bruno," Pau said.

So because the baby bear was abandoned they want it to remain abandoned as they say for nature taking its course.

But the minute a human baby is abandoned by the mother police go searching everywhere to prosecute the parent whilst the baby is in protective custody. Why can't the same be for animals in human custody?

I remember a story I think about about a bear who found two abandoned babies. The bear brought them up as its own and soon they adapted the behaviour of bears until they were discovered by people, who shot the bear and sent children to an institute. I can't remember if one of them survivied in trying to adapt.

There was another story recently about a tiger who killed an ape or monkey and thought the new born chld was her own but unfortunately couldn't survive the night without the mother ape or monkey.

I am think that those activists which I call arsevists are just going about their business ignorantly. Its like dropping litter and saying "No leave it let nature do its course." Just my point of view.

Hah, that bit about Berlin != Bavaria made me laugh quite a bit. Ah, it's always fun to watch the flame-war between those two regions. happy.gif

Hmmm perhaps they're just doing it to piss off those beer swilling Oktoberfesting bastards. You think if the Bavarians had let their bear live the Berliners would have killed Knut and accused Bavaria of being soft on Bearism?

That bear is clearly the Antichrist. Serves him right.

I mean, think about it. Polar bears are inherently evil, judging by the fact that they appear in Coca-Cola ads and are rumoured to be left-handed. Those unnatural freaks! But this particular individual is even more diabolical. When you encode Knut into binary, you get 01001011011011100111010101110100. That's eighteen 1's, and as we all know, 18 = 6 + 6 + 6. It's kinda like the Number of the Beast! How can you people be so blind?

That just doesn't make any goddamn sense. Why kill the bear? You'd think they'd be happy that the zoo didn't take a bear already used to the wild and cage it up in the zoo.

Those people are really really wacky. Since when have humans cared about what's "species appropriate"? Should we let abandoned human children die because their mothers abandon them? Are these morons trying to operate on the assumption that the mother bear knows why she abandoned her cubs to die and it was a good reason? I suppose they'll yell at veternarians that splint broken bones of animals that hurt themselves for doing something not species appropriate, too?

Re-fucking-diculous.

I mentioned above about the story of the bear who raised two abandoned human babies of their own. The bear got paid back by bullets.

Talking of protection but these I think they are hypocrites. Shouldn't these animal activitists be going to farms where they cruelly battery farm animals in small filthy cramped cages which are fed chemical cocktails to pump them up and generate more eggs a day rather than denying treatment over the care of a bear.
