I know the intention is for the viewer to see other events that are happening "in the meanwhile" while the former scene is put on pause.
the more I think about it, it seems that the scenes are paused as such, to keep the viewer always interested in the overall film storyline. that is, if the film simply entered into one scene and completely finished that scene before going to the next, the presentation of the scenes would not be as interesting as going back and forth between various scenes and various characters.
For example, while watching Empire Strikes Back, I dont understand the real need for the scene where Luke first encounters Yoda on Dagobah to be broken up. I guess Lucas decided that the scene was so compelling that the viewer could have become so involved with that particular scene, that they would have lost track of what was occuring in the other scenes.
I would like to see that scene, in its entirety, with any pauses to take me to other scenes.
however, if every scene was done in a slightly different fashion, to where they arent broken up at all, it may lose need for the frequent pauses in the film.
Im simply using Empire as an example, I know such pauses in films exist in other SW films, and other films as well.
There are also some scenes in ESB that really have no real purpose. They arent truly needed to move the storyline along, and the story would still make perfect sense without them. In ESB, one such scene that comes to mind is the scene where Han Solo & Company are inside the Millenium Falcon which in turn is inside of a large monster. After deliberating for about 10 minutes, they finally figure out that they arent in a cave, and Han flies out of the monster's mouth.
Cool scene, I guess,..but really isnt needed to move the story along.
TPM is chock full of unnecessary scenes.
I would like to see all 6 films with certain edits that remove all unnecessary scenes, pauses and dialogue. I wonder how the films would be with that presentation. Im sure it would shave off at least an hour's worth of viewing time.
