Hey, Yahtzee... Here's the day I thought I'd never see...

I slightly disagree with you.

I'll wait for the sounds of shock and disapproval to dissipate.

Several points to make.

Okay now, yes those adds are a great deal ambiguous about the chemicals contained in cigarette smoke, but the way I look at it, if you're stupid enough to be fooled by those adds, you're stupid enough to believe your one and only joy in life is a malevolent, acetone injector.

These adds aren't new. They've tried this before.

AppleSeeds contain trace amounts of cyanide. It is also recommended that you do not eat apple seeds.

Those adds forget to tell you which cyanide is in these ciggarettes. Hydrogen Cyanide. That's right. And it's in vapour form. Now most of the other "harmful chemicals" do bugger all to you. But hydrogen cyanide is very poisonous. Consider you smoke 10 cigarettes a day. Each cigarette contains approxmately 10- 400 micrograms of hydrogen cyanide. Let's use the average, 205 micrograms. That's 2.05 milligrams a day. 39 milligrams is considered a dangerous amount of hydrogen cyanide. 'Nuff said on that topic.

Hydrogen Cyanide is slightly denser than air, and can remain with 10 metres of the source for up to 20 minutes. So the law about smoking near a public building is justified in my opinion.

I do realise your update is about the adds, but I really can't think much to say of them. Except maybe they are necessary. Not to stop smokers from killing themselves. That is their choice. Just to stop them from inflicting death upon other people.

And smoking is ikky... sick.gif

You really ought to give us smokers a little bit more credit than that. I don't aim to piss off the people around me when I smoke, that is why I smoke either in smoking sections, on the balcony, etc, where it bothers no one. However, it's a demagogue statement to say that smoking IN THE STREETS is harmful to other people, as it's definitely not the cigarettes that are fucking up the delicate balance of nature there. Smoke coming out from exhaust pipes, for instance, is a lot more harmful, but I don't see campaigns to ban transportation (except in LA, where the smog situation is really out of control).

The other thing that pisses me off was also mentioned by Yahtzee: those pictures of cancerous lungs and shit on cigarette packs. It's just like putting pictures of obese kids with acne-riddled faces on candy boxes, in order to prevent people from getting fat. 'Oh, you find that disgusting? Guess what!'

I personally hate smoking, but it's amazing how popular and successful the 'smoking in public places' ban has been here in the Republic of Ireland.

Funnily enough, even smokers think it's a good thing... I went to Paris recently and had to endure smoky restaurants and the like, and it was disgusting.

Smoking and drinking excessively are both detrimental to peoples health, (I do neither) and so I feel it's justified to put on any ad campaigns that will deter either, as I do not want to pay taxes so some chump can claim free medical aid and get a new lung because they were stupid enough to smoke.

Just my two cents worth...

I never really cared about smoking or not.

If they want to smoke, I let them.

All that anti-smoker stuff isn't THAT present in Germany, though. We DO have all that "OMG, Smoking will kill you!" on the packages, and smoking is more and more forbidden at most places, but I've never seen an ad showing me a rotting body with the words "That could be you with smoking! Ha!".

So, yeah, I don't really care. If the people stop smoking, it won't be any healthier for me with all the cars and factories anway.

The only thing bothering me is the smell your clothes get when exposed to smokers. But it's not permanent either wink.gif

Ah yes, the good ol' "Smoking will kill you" signs on our cigarette packages... well, do you want to know what really kills you? It's the people who're pissed off about you trying to force them out of their precious habit.

Necessary perhaps, but here in Canada they've had those ads for as long as I can remember - and they don't seem to have curbed smoking (by teens or adults) that much at all, as far as I can tell. Rising cost is what seems to turn them away, or getting sick from them for others.

For nonsmokers (like myself), they're more annoying than anything. Being repeated over, and over, and over again.

Gawd, I always hated those public service announcements.

EDIT - And don't get me started on those cigarette packages with the gruesome images. Those are just gross.

I don't mind smokers, a few of my friends are smokers, but what gets to me are smokers who have their own heads up their arses and go all 'its my own choice... blah blah blah!' and think that their Che Guavara or something just because they smoke.

No offence to any smokers intended of course.

P.S. Yeah, I know I have a Che Guavra parody in my avatar, but that wasn't the point of the comparison.

I'm one of those liberals with their exaggerated coughs. The smell of a smoker's clothing is enough to drive me nuts - I hate strong smells, like perfume, it makes me generally unable to breathe. It's funny but here in California with our rabid anti-smoking state we don't have disgusting body parts all over our ciggarette boxes (not that I've seen, anyway, since I don't smoke, but people leave their empty boxes all over the place). I used to see posters in grade school but after that they kinda dropped off.

Anyway, I'm always constantly amazed by how many smokers cite anti-smokers as their reason for not quitting. No judgement there, I just think it's interesting.

The state is stealing more and more freedom from the people. It all comes down to your own decision to smoke or not. What will happen next? Prohibition? If you want to inject heroin you should be able to buy it legally.. it's your life, you should do whatever comes to mind. Like smoking pot. I don't do drugs myself, but I think these drugs should be sold in stores and not in crack-houses, financing banditism in general.

Bah

Yeah, and while we're at it, lets take away that speed limit, we should be free to endanger our lives on the road, its our own lives, and asbesdos, we should be free to poison ourselves, instead of having those faschist environmental clean up crews come along and make it safe for everyone!

Right, the wellfare state's going down the gutter anyway, so why not legalize it all?

There are cases of asshole smokers (yes, admittedly, there are quite a few) vs. asshole non-smokers (shooo-wee, numerous). There are, of course, the ideal smokers who take the non-smokers around them into account and don't light up, and the ideal non-smokers who don't come up to a smoker from the other end of the street and start coughing. This depends on their personality, not their habits, both kinds of assholes are just... assholes.

By the way, Yahtzee: even if you win the lottery, I advise against taking up smoking again, especially if you didn't have the desired anxiety-lifting effect, because then it is kind of pointless. You won't really like smoking, you'll just get used to smoking. Moreover, we don't want to see our benevolent leader on iron lungs, do we. wink.gif

I don't go out of my way to irritate smokers, but if I'm in a group full of non-smokers and one prick lights up a get annoyed. In the same way that if I hang out with a group of smokers (which I do occasionally) I don't bitch about it because, hey, "It's my choice..." to hang out with a group of smokers.

It's still ikky sick.gif

Yeah, what'd be the point if it doesn't help your anxiety? You make your teeth bad (But being British it's too late. Don't hurt me), make your breath stink, stank your clothes up, give yourself more wrinkles, fade your hair, yellow your fingers, poison your blood, damage your lungs, risk the chance of cancer and get addicted. Only some of those may be urban myths.

YES FOR FUCK'S SAKE BECAUSE WE SMOKERS WANT TO GET CANCER ASAP AND DIE YOUNG, but that way there are no 'positive' effects whatsoever.
Anyway, I live in a big city, I enjoy having no sense of smell, goddamnit. Thing is, one can be sensible about smoking, just like with alcohol, food, sweets, etc. It's wrong to have this non-smoker's 'eternal life fantasy' just because you don't smoke cigarettes, ok? You're gonna fucking die as well. Sorry if I popped a pink bubble with that.
