You know the scene, when Vader's helmet is lowered in place and we the audience
see what he sees, which is the Terminator like digital readout, which renders the whole world red. What would the reason for this be? It can't be damage from the Mustafat battle, because he's incinerated from the waist down, and Obi Wan has no damage as far as we can tell later on, and he was exposed as much as Vader. Red would seem to hinder the vision of someone who wasn't previously accustomed seeing in this range, rendering it quite impractical and further cutting down on Vader's effectiveness as a fighter.

Well that's a brain teaser...

Well, first off, I don't understand why Vader sees red either; I'm going to posit an explanation for why I think he might, but I hate to do it because I doubt this much research went into the decision to put this in the movie.

First off, different colored lenses filter light differently and have different advantages, which is why sunglasses and sports goggles have different types of tinting and lens colors available.

For example, yellow or amber lenses filter light to provide wearers with the best depth perception possible under varying conditions; yellow would be used in low light conditions, while amber would be used in brighter settings. This would be ideal if you were going to be doing target shooting; and in fact a lot of shooting glasses are available in yellow or amber:

Now, red and vermillion allow you to have the best contrast in low light conditions and also allow you to have better night vision. So, while initially this color might not make sense, considering that Vader is going to be spending most of his time onboard star destroyers which don't necessarily have the best lighting, or piloting tie fighters through the blackness of space, this color choice might actually make a lot more sense.

Given that Vader's armor is supposed to be pretty multi-functional, I'm going to guess that Vader can probably control how his lenses filter light, meaning that he might actually see things as yellow, red, blue, or without any filter, depending on the situation. It would probably be akin to Geordi La Forge's VISOR (Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement) in Star Trek: The Next Generation; if I'm not mistaken, Geordi could change the contrast on his visor and could calibrate it so that he would see radio waves, infrared, ultraviolet, etc. I'm not sure how Vader's optics were connected to him, so they might not have been as advanced as that. But it does seem like just seeing red all the time would make things hard on a person's eyes.

P.S.

Oh, what I was writing about lens colors is taken from information on this website:

Just in case people wanted to see a source for that information.

I always had the feeling that GL wanted the "cool look" that Emperor Zurg had in Toy Story 2.

Well yeah, I think the simplest explanation is generally the best, and red eyes look "cool."

But then, it's Star Wars, I don't expect a lot of things to have a firm basis in scientific fact. On the other hand, things should make sense, at least from an internal standpoint. If Vader is going to see red, then there should be a reason why. However, I agree with you, Miladyblue, I think it was done just because it looks cool.

In the original Star Wars, the Vader mask does have red eyes.

So technically Lucas was on the right track with this one, though I suppose the digital readouts could have been any color, the lenses themselves are just tinted red (the stormtroopers just seem to have your usual "sunglasses black" tinted lenses).

But still, yeah, apparently the nintendo Virtual Boy (anybody remember that?) gave people massive headaches, and that was all red (though it may have been a combination of that and the fact that you had to put your eyes up to that screen in a cramped position when playing).

I don't think it was a GL decision. Just something that happened. Same way The Empire Strikes Back turned out to be so good. You get a bunch of creative people involved and let them do their thing, and...

It was probably a GL decision.

How about threepio in TPM? didn't it have a shot (of widdle Annie himself, no less) from 3PO's point of view? That was weird (and certainly must therefore have increased significance). dry.gif

Maybe I'm wrong. I thought it was around "See ya threepio. I'll order those coverings for you someday (para)".
