Nintendo (Wii)sells out in 7 minutes

WEB shopping site Amazon today sold out of reserve orders for the new Nintendo console in just seven minutes.

The online retailer said a rush of buyers for the Wii made it the site's fastest selling pre-order item.

The website’s available reserves sold out faster than its previous pre-order copies of the Harry Potter books and the Coldplay album, X and Y.

Nintendo’s Wii console will hit stores in the UK on December 8 priced at £179.99.

It is hotly tipped to be a best-seller during the busy run up to Christmas, due partly to the delayed UK launch of the rival PlayStation3 console.

Amazon.co.uk’s console and videogames manager James Schall said: "We expected a high number of people to visit the site today but the response was phenomenal."

Thanks to the good Doctor for this 'un.

The question is, why would anyone need effort to outsell Coldplay in the first place?

That's really surprising.
I work in retail
specifically in electronics
and it seemed that all the chaos was surrounding the PS3.

It wasn't until at least 2 days before it's release
did i get any customers asking for the wii.
I don't understand it either.
The PS3 is by far superior to the Wii in everyway.

Yeah, the PS3 may have delayed shipments
as much as a months wait,
but sony has a more loyal fan base
the nintendo and the demand will still be there.

My sentiments exactly. I can't say that I'm surprised about Wii selling like mad, but who would want to spend money on that mediocre and boring Coldplay album?

*sigh* I just don't understand humans. closedeyes.gif

Yes and no. Technically, yes. So superior that it's a bit overloaded. It's not really a console anymore, but a multimedia-pc. Maybe worth the price, but if you just wanna play...

Here's how I understand the whole "popularity of the PS" thing.

PS1: Not quite sure. Good timing, probably.
PS2: Came out at the crest of teh DVD revolution. Cheaper than most DVD players at the time, PLUS games?
PS3: What the hell is Blue Ray? Why did they sacrifice vibration just to copy the Wiis motion sensor? Considering the Wiis controller is a bit more universifiable (sp?), I've had bad things predicted.

The Wii is going to clobber the PS3. The Wii is a gaming console. It isnt a home entertainment center, a toaster, or anything like that. It's something you could play with your kids or with your parents. The PS3 sounds entirely too technological and has far more features than it needs that drive the price up insanely high.

The Wii is fun, and fun will always beat out gimmicks and crap. I think Nintendo is continuing the tradition that they started with the game cube of light, easy to use gaming systems that are good for families and young people to just play around on. I think I spent more time playing SSB Melee than almost any other game.

The PS3, I don't know what niche theyre hoping to get into that hasnt been taken up by the 360 already.

Hmmm, ...I loved my 'Cube just for a few games and it broke at the same time all my friend's 'Cubes broke. It was a first gen system and we all waited in line for one. I was so devastated after about a year and a half of Nintendo acting like they didn't know what was going on with the system and no good fighting games, or anything really good for that matter. Save, Metroid Prime and Jedi Outcast. That Legend of Zelda: Windwaker was by far the biggest dissapointment in gaming and a month after that game came out, my cube wouldn't read anything.

If I get a new system, I might buy the 360. I've never really been loyal to Sony's products, and Nintendo has been the biggest let down in one way or another all my life. Now, if something like KotOR 3 was made and put exclusively on Wii, then I'd get one. Other than that, I'm not a family person.

I keep on think of the title as this. "Sold out in the Wii War."

For Playstation 3 as well as the RSX GPU which I never heard of before I see that the Playstation 3 has 7, 3.2 GHz Power Pc processors. That sounds good. Now I would like to compare the performance of that. Whether I see the Wii's specification has a fraction of one as 729 MHz and under half,GPU speed of 243 MHz?

Yeah, this isn't a debate that's even worth getting into...
The Wii has a chance of doing better because it's more accessible to your average Joe. The PS3 has a chance of doing better because Sony fanboys are fucking intense about their Playstations. These are people who write angry letters when Sony does what they always seem to do and release remodelled versions of the console every couple of years. They're completely insane. So really, all we can do is sit and wait. It's impossible to know who's going to come out on top this time out.
The PS3 is, however, almost unnecessarily overloaded. There's no reason for a gaming console to have seven processors. That's just stupid.
The Wii, however, is definitely going to appeal to parents. A friend of mine was lucky enough to grab one on its release, and called me while playing a tennis game for it (handsfree phone). He was out of breath from the amount of effort exerted to play. So the age-old complaint about kids not getting any exercise because of video games could potentially be put to rest here if Nintendo plays their development cards right. Parents can see that it takes some physical activity to play these games, and opt for the Wii over its competitors.
Oh, and then there's advertising. Sony took its old route again and started doing all these creepy, weird-as-hell commercials again. Nintendo's Wii adverts are friendly, cheerful, and make the console look fun. What would YOU buy YOUR kids if you saw the two ads back to back?

I don't like Sony for a number of reasons and certainly not a fanboy. After Sony put out rootkits on their music cd's, to me that is aggressive and intrusive. I do like the idea of seven processors even though I see it as insane for just for games console at present. A feeling that they want the people to use it for about everything? The reason they have seven processors: I ask what can be done with seven processors?

I think one solution is to have the console capable of seven processors but bundling one or two with it so that it can be sold cheaper. So when there is need for more processing speed people can purchase a second or faster processor. I think it would be good if they did that for the graphics card as well. Somehow I don't think it can happen if they keep on changing it the design.

Well that is so true about the excercising I even don't get to excerise for a number of reasons.

Good points made, Heccubus! I'll wait this war out to see if Nintendo will put anything else on their console besides sport title though. It would be interesting to see if they'll have some decent racing games that are controller sensitive...

Yea all these points have a validation
but the PS3 is for SERIOUS gamers.

The Wii is geared for a younger audience.
You have to get up and active to use the Wii.

For a Couchpotato it's too much energy.
And i'd rather get gamer's thumb then tennis elbow. biggrin.gif

That's what they said about the original X-Box too, and you may note that the PS2, which had the broadest appeal out of the last three consoles, outsold the crap out of it.

Oh yeah...
well at least the PS3 didn't have a delayed released
like PS2 did because taken apart its
pieces would make an easy bomb or something
so there
tongue.gif

JK but that makes me wonder if they hadn't
said anything would bombs have been
made or would the console just explode
in a visually impressive way.

I dunno, I tore apart my PS2 one day and some odd gray matter came out of it. I don't know what that stuff was but it coated my fingers when I touched it.
