Why was Sifo-Dyas needed as a character? Chef tends to notice a lot of the 'unclear' things in Star Wars... this is one I ran across.

Sidious evokes the help of his apprentice Darth Tyranus. Sidious tells Tyranus to hire Sifo-Dyas, a Jedi who shares his sentiments that "the Jedi aren't what they used to be" or whatever.

They use Sifo-Dyas as a scape-goat to order the clone army on Kamino. Sifo tells the long-necked-aliens that the order is from the senate, and for whatever reason, the long-necked-aliens believe him on his word, and instantly set about making the clones.

So Tyranus chooses the bounty hunter Jango Fett as the clone blueprint. Tells Jango all about the plan to overthrow the Jedi. But before that, Sidious orders Tyranus to slay Sifo-Dyas.

Apparently, Sifo was a scape-goat. Apparently. Obviously.

This is my question:

What's the point?

Dooku under the guise of Darth Tyranus could have went and ordered the clone army himself. It's obvious that by that time, Dooku had already left the Jedi Order, so no one would have connected him to being the one who ordered the army! And on top of that, apparently Dooku felt secure enough to spill the beans to Jango Fett!

Was Sifo-Dyas just another useless character to thicken the storyline, and make it even more heavy? I don't get it.

Ahh, my take on this was, maybe Sifo Dyas was the good Jedi name of Count Dooku before he fell to the dark side. I thought maybe that Sifo Dyas was as much Count Dooku/ Darth Tyranus as Anakin is as much Darth Vader.

I mean, look at what Obi-wan says in ESB, "Luke I don't want to lose you to the Emporer the way I lost Vader." What?! Obi-wan never lost Vader, he never had Vader. He lost Anakin. Another thing, "A young pupil of mine named Darth Vader murdered your father." No he didn't, and I thought they were just bringing this whole "certain point of view" nonsense back into the PT.

Being that in EP II, Obi-wan does state that he was under the impression that Syfo Dyas died some ten years ago, that about marks when the clone army was ordered and Qui-gon died. I was under the impression that Syfo Dyas was Count Dooku and Darth Tyranus "betrayed and murdered" the good man Syfo Dyas.... you see where I'm coming from?

I wasn't under the impression that Sifo Dyas might have been the "good" name of Dooku/Tyrranus, though that might have been interesting. Had that been the case, wouldn't Obi Wan have recognized Sifo Dyas, even if he had changed his name to Dooku? Even after Anakin's "fall" to the dark side and the Darth Vader identity, Obi Wan still recognized him, and still referred to him as Anakin. wacko.gif

Obi Wan: Sifo Dyas? We all thought you were dead!
Dooku: Sifo Dyas IS dead. I am Dooku!

That might have made an interesting twist, making the Anakin/Darth Vader identity switch follow some sort of progression. When the Jedi fall to the dark side, they change identities. At least, their names, as though they had been reborn as someone else. The cloners of Kamino, meantime, ignorant of the identity crisis of a fallen Jedi, might have assumed that Sifo Dyas had changed his name, and made the appropriate notification of his colleagues amongst the Jedi. Or something like that.

This is how i see it

Possibility #1
Perhaps Sifo Dyas was a good friend of Count Dooku's.
And just like in Eps.II with Obi-wan, Dooku tried to get him to join the dark side.

Except Dyas wasn't about to fall for those tricks and fought back. Thus he had to be killed and Dooku used him as a scape goat. On Geonosis Obi was already a prisoner on his way to execution so their was no need to kill him immediatley after the rejection.

Possibility #2
Sifo Dyas being wise (or so i hope),went to Kamino to have the
clones build as an army for the republic because he knew

(all good things must come to an end) the jedi would eventually need help.
And he probably overheard or felt through the force a plot to destroy the jedi.

i think dias/plagus had the clones built to take over the galaxy. the droids were built to use the trade federation as an excuse to mass such an army so no one would question it.

Very interesting idea there. Wish I thought of it.

Sifo-Dyas was little more than a story thread that served no real purpose as it was never resolved onscreen.
