I know sarcasm is not really obvious on the internet so try to imagine that here I used the same tone of voice as one of the funny-ass officers filling in the new recruits like this:
"And before you go to sleep, be sure to take the grenade belts off. If you're unsure why you should do this, feel free to ask any of our drill sergeants, they'll answer all of your questions with the utmost accuracy."

Come on, David. You can't blame the guy for wanting answers. That is what keeps this forum alive. I am very curious to know what the frag did happen on that first night, too. Are you going to tell me you are not?

Not really. I find most of these issues trivial, and if you're in doubt, you can still interpret this stuff any way you want. I think that canonizing the unseen events of that day would have had about as much sense as having Trilby to reveal his real name in 5DAS. These games are supposed to have a mysterious atmosphere, where even at the end, you still have a few unanswered questions, unlike in Scooby Doo (which I've always loathed). Or would you prefer that?

To be honest, I really want to know Trilby's name.
Of course, revealing that in 5DAS would be awful. But there wouldn't be any problem at all if Yahtzee reveal it in the last game.

Maybe he is one of the DeFoes.

No, seriously, maybe that's why such a famous cat burglar was so intersted in the DeFoe manor in the first place.

He was interested in it because his fence called him up and said it was empty but full of stuff to loot. That's it, no need to involve any conspiracy theories.

So, a highly educated thief, who was involved in many great robberies;
who has cheated the Scotland Yard more times than Jerry cheated Tom;
who was never even near to get caught;
who had expensive clothes to keep clean would risk his dignity as an elite thief and get involved with an amateur abandoned-house-invasion just to steal some old furniture and maybe some change?

No. He wanted information about his family.

Man, is it a pink elephant flying over there?

If he was really related to the DeFoes, you could argue that he could just announce he was the next of kin, inherit the place legally, negating the need to break into the place at all.

Of course, then you could argue that he wouldn't want the publicity, and that he considers breaking into huge abandoned manors fun. I still think his being related would be too big a coincidence.

Also, how would we find out what his name is if (as hinted at) the last game is set after 7DAS? Yeah, I know, there's always a way...
Signatures are overrated.

Well, he leaves documents behind in a time capsule, of course, just like he did in 7DAS, a message what to do in case the idol's been destroyed.

For instance:
"You guys are all irredeemably fucked now, or my name isn't [CENSORED]!"

You've all been reading too many conspiracy stories while stoned. Bad combination.

Let's consider for a minute the possibility of Trilby being the descendant of a bastard son of Roderick DeFoe's brother. A brother we never heard about. In this case, there is no way Trilby could inherit the manor.

Besides, Trilby was a thief even before knowing about the manor, so he was not supposed to appear in public.

Cool... Pavarotti is offering me a glass of coca-cola... I should sleep a little more...

No need for time capsule, the prophecy mention him, we'll probably just find a cult book with the prophecy in it, and oh ha! Trilby's real name. Or it will be half burned and we'll have to play the next X Trilby's games to collect cryptic hints in order guess his real name, and the first to guess it right will win some very generic prize, like a cursed wooden idol representing John Defoe and 0916 in some epic fighting, carved by Yahtzee himself (not true at all).
