I was walking along the waterfront and took a break to catch some rays and watch the ships come into the harbor. When I got up I walked past a bench where I saw someone who looked familiar. I made a second glace and thought: Is that George?
He was sitting with a lady older than him. It could've been a relative, or just a friend. As I walked past, he looked at me, but I kept on walking. I looked back and decided it was him. He was in a t-shirt and shorts. He had a very red face from being in the sun, and had a very white beard. He kind of looked like Santa. I thought I should go back and talk to him, but I went and had lunch instead.
During lunch I decided to go back to see if he was still there. I looked around the corner and I didn't see them. I edge over for a better look and then saw GL on the other side of the bench about to do some window shopping. It was at that point that I was going to let him enjoy his anonymity.
No regrets, though. It would have been neat to approach him, but I'm not really a groupie kind of person.
So far, as a flight attendant for 9 months, I've served drinks to Bob Newhart and the guy who played Gina Davis's Chief of Staff in her president TV show. I saw Justice Scalia at the Denver airport, and I shook hands with Jessie Jackson at O'hare. And now GL. I'll talk to him next time, especially now that I know what he looks like when not in a flannel shirt and jeans.
