some could even go so far as to state that Star Wars:Kotor is an RPG, and then try to substantiate their claim by using that classic "from a certain point of view" crap.

I would say it is. It has good characterisation, an engaging story with an excellent twist, and you (or at least I) really felt that decisions I made had an effect on the setting. Sure, it was fairly linear, but you had a reasonable degree of freedom in each area.

Thats what I thought.

Being evil never felt so good as it did in KOTOR.

Well, like other games from other genres, the traditional criteria that defined what certain games are and arent is always being redefined.

So, you could say KOTOR is an RPG, Zelda is an RPG, and Final Fantasy in an RPG. Then you could break it down further into sub-categories by deciding what types of RPGs each game is.

Being evil was boring in KOTOR. "Hmm... Should I randomly slaughter innocent people for paltry amounts of money, or should I randomly slaughter these other innocent people for paltry amounts of money?"

Zelda is not an RPG in any sense of the word that doesn't fit every game to ever have a character you control. KOTOR and FF are strategyish games where you are allowed to develop your characters' abilities in a moderately customizable way while you follow along the linear story-line. KOTOR at least gives you a little bit of an actual role to play.

The way I approached KOTOR was by making decisions in the game much like I actually would in real life. It kept me middle of the road most of the time keeping me just inside the dark side. At the end, you either have to choose to become evil or turn into a pussy goodietwoshoes, and I just don’t have it in me. I actually tried to play the good guy ending, but after 3 minutes of that tripe, I had to stop and restart where I had last saved it and play it again the right way. I played KOTOR all the way through 7 times now. Not once have I been able to sit through the good guy ending. Besides, its fun to get scolded by Kate Beckinsale - I mean Bastila, when you do something cruel. She was cooler when she was pissed.

I'd say it's an adventure game.

How about "an adventure game that makes up for the lack of plot and character depth with annoying and repetitive monster-ass kicking"?

My, that's pretty darn accurate. And I must know, since I've been playing it for the last three days and got utterly bored.

Good that you mention this, as it was something I really hated in that game. You were either a serial murderer wacko, or some sickeningly smarmy do-gooder asswipe. Why couldn't you make a classical lawful evil character, who conformed to the rules (he created) only to be able to keep power in his hand more easily, such as Darth Vader was? The closest to that you could do was to stay neutral, never intervene/stay out of trouble and we wouldn't call Vader a grey Jedi who runs away everytime he's presented with a choice, would we? Evil does not equate to being a berserking psycho fucktard. It's a lot more fun to manipulate people into totally acting against their will, not necessarily by using Force Persuasion, but by observing weak points and applying psychology there. (See Fallout 2 for reference, BEST RPG EVER.) KotOR 2 did somewhat better on this part (since you were able to influence your party's members), however, the problem solving had the same pattern again.

That slaughtering-innocent-people-for-ridiculously-low-amounts-of-money stunt is just like swatting flies with a shotgun, not to mention that when I'm playing the role of a lawful evil character, I consider it beneath me to pull such shit off.
