I think I spent 80% of the time playing MGS1 just giving up and smoking Snake to death.

I also found it a bit strange that snake would be fighting a boss and dodging bullets when suddenly he'd put away his gun and turn on that codec thingy. You'd think whoever was in the room with him would find it a little annoying, when it takes 15 minutes of dialogue and random cutscenes to get back to the battle.
