So, great sountrack, beautiful cinematography, great locations, and a fair ability to keep to the story. I've always liked this film, but watching it recently I noticed that the film makers changed the story and went out of their way to make the British look not only un-heroic, but pretty much villainous. What the fuck? Can Americans not realize the difference between the English troops in "The Patriot" and the English troops in this film? Come on, you guys ruined some highly nice characters and took away a lot from the story.

Also, did anyone get the impression that Uncas and the younger Munro girl were in love from the movie? I know the book kinda spelled it out, but the movie seemed to very much gloss over it.

I figured that was why Uncas ran ahead of his father and brother to fight Magwa, and why Cora did what she did, so I figure it was spelled out, yeah.

I agree that pains were taken to make Nathaniel American rather than British, and that's too bad, but the movie is always different from the book.

Great score.

Damned fine score, I'm just pissed that they painted the British as the antagonists because a few stupid Americans can't read their history books.

Well, yes. MASTER AND COMMANDER suffered a similar fate, where the antagonists were changed from American to French, just so American audiences might identify with the British heroes. It's nonsense through and through, this Nationalist approach to history. However, while I thought MASTER AND COMMANDER was a simple diversion, I still think LAST OF THE MOHICANS (which I watched recently in the home theatre, in a double bill with 12 MONKEYS), is a masterpiece, warts and all.

"No, you submit, do you hear? You be strong, you survive... You stay alive, no matter what occurs! I will find you. No matter how long it takes, no matter how far, I will find you."

Damned romantic, that, and a far cry from the nonsense of giving a gal a pistol and reminding her to save the last round for herself, to prevent capture (WINCHESTER '73). Poo poo to that; this Hawkeye is a pragmatist.

I agree it was a grand movie. I'm just glad I wasn't the only one who noticed the deviations. Messing with a story to make it a better movie is one thing, but dumbing it down for the sake of dumbing it down is quite another.

Did anyone catch them changing Hawkeye's English name from Natty Bumppo to Nathaniel Poe?
