Rumsfeld Says Osama Will Probably Be Found One Day
Thu Feb 26, 2004 07:10 AM ET
By Charles Aldinger and Mike Collett-White

KABUL (Reuters) - Osama bin Laden will probably be captured or killed one day, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Thursday, but he added he had no idea when.

Rumsfeld was addressing a news briefing with Afghan President Hamid Karzai that comes amid stepped up U.S. and Pakistani operations against bin Laden's al Qaeda network and the Taliban.

Asked if U.S. and allied forces were getting closer to capturing the world's most wanted man, Rumsfeld said:

"Close doesn't count. The world will be a better place when he is captured or killed. That is the goal of a great many nations... I suspect that we'll find that it is accomplished at some point in the future and I wouldn't have any idea when."

In hearing this Bush has released plans to open a new "Department of Bold Statements".

I declare that my old Batman figures will "probably be found one day".

In what capacity will he be found? Mummified in a sarcophogus 1000 years in the future?

One of these days, we will dig up his remains, and put them to trial.

That's right Rummy! Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades not international policy. I suspect that you might be right. Osam is likely to be killed - killed by old age; by a bus; by a radical insider; by any number of things...

Who let's these people speak? Someone is responsible!

It would have looked better for their silly war on terrorism had he said "Osama will be found one day." The inclusion of the word "probably", while making the statement 100% true, doesn't really help for making the Bush Admininstration look like they know what they're doing.

The only reason I can think of that they HAVEN'T found Osama yet would be that they're intentionally waiting closer until election time. I refuse to believe he's that hard to find. Supposedly they had him surrounded a month ago. Surounded? Okay. Do you want to catch him? Go get him!

I'm also sick of hearing about "how many caves" there are. Yeah, that must be really tricky. If only the United States Military had some of the most advanced technology in the world on their side. Then they'd be able to find him.

Maybe the U.S. should invest in some caves.

I personally feel that a 6 foot middle eastern man with kidney problems who is probably packing a dialysis machine should really be easier to spot in a crowd.

I don't know what to say about Osama. If we catch him, we will probably just get bombed some more.

I think they should keep his capturing hush hush. And just quietly snip them all down with out making a big fuss.

Then in 10-20 years, CNN can have a 2 hour special on the "capturing of every al queda".

My favorite excuse for why he hasnt been captured is that, although he is 6'4", he has been hiding in an area occupied by unusually tall people. Seriously. This was one of the reasons given. No, I'm serious.

Only place I could find to respond. DRAFT NOTICE! Congress is mulling restoring involuntary military service. While I could accept the war on a volunteer basis I draw the line at being called in to serve when I have no moral investment in the US or its policies any longer. If this does get passed I'll be looking for a new place to go.
