As you wish...

Grandpa: That day, barend was amazed to discover that when Kurgan was saying "As you wish", what he meant was, "I love you." And even more amazing was the day he realized he truly loved him back.

I was only being polite in asking about which word you meant to use Georgelucas4greedo. If it indeed had been "Physic Friends Network," then that is something that I am unfamiliar with and I would've liked to know what it was exactly. Please, do not vent thy hostilities toward me. My questioning harbored no ill-will toward you. sleep.gif

Well if anything Luke was not a member of Physic Friend's due to his ability to lift rocks with the sheer will of his mind.

JK was alright, but somewhat redundified by KOTOR.

battle front 2 rocks the socks... the instant action features are awsome. love the 'hunt' mode... wiping out the natives on their home turf; jawas, ewoks, gungans... we murdered gungans for like 40 minutes... it was fucking sweet.

Sigh.... Must all good threads end in meaningless pirate vs ninja type banter?

I just had a closing remark I wanted to make on the new DVDs before I end this latest little foray into the forums of Chefelf.

We've talked a lot about anamorphic this and how Lucas didn't do that and at the end of the day, these films still look and sound fantastic. And personally, I think that speaks volumes for them. Despite the fact that they have been treated with such contempt by Lucasfilm and that nothing has been done to restore them, they are still every bit as amazing now as they were when they were first released.

And regarding that whole EU and Games thing, most of the EU is crap, I do agree - but I still think Timothy Zahn's trilogy is wonderful. It's a lot like 'The Empire Strikes Back' in many ways. It expanded the Star Wars universe and took the story to new heights. It's a great trilogy with a gripping story that is intelligently told.

As for the games, I'm sure 'Knights of the Old Republic' and those other new ones are great. But my favourite will always be the original "Dark Forces" where you're just playing a mercenary with a gun shutting down a new project of the Empire. It's got a great story and lots of exciting missions and best of all, it's got none of that Jedi stuff that ruined all its sequels. I guess from the sounds of things, most of you other 'Star Wars' game players wanted to be Luke Skywalker when you were kids. Me, I always just wanted to be Han Solo. So out of all the games, "Dark Forces" is my favourite.

Well, I think that about sums my five cents up so until next time, so long and thanks for all the fish.

Apples to oranges. KOTOR is an RPG without "realtime" combat (much less multiplayer).

While an improvement over the overhyped and annoying Battlefront 1 in many respects (but not in others, like the lack of the dashboard views a la 'cockpit mode' and the ability to go prone and crawl on your belly, and the dumbing down of some of the maps like Geonosis and the exclusion of many others, plus the annoying "infinite troops" of single player's AI teams, etc), as a game SWBF2 is still flawed. The lack of support for both games (beyond the initial "star wars dvd release" cashin) really bugged me and a lot of others. I tried to like the game, I really did. I will admit, the "first time" I played some of the movie themed maps (like Endor, in SWBF1 instant action) felt very "cinematic."

Then reality set in, and I realize I could barely drive a speeder bike a few inches before smashing into a twig and exploding (was this level of "movie realism" really necessary?)... or the ackward and repetative action of the AT-ST walkers, and the impossibility of killing Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader (well, except by running them over, which, once discovered, made them pretty much useless to me).

The Battlefront series is an exercise in wasted opportunities. Even though Jedi Academy was the first and only game in the JK series to provide vehicles support in multiplayer, and even though it was quite limited in variety compared to either BF game, at least what they gave you was a lot more fun. You had total control over the Swoop bikes. You could run people over, and hack them on the side with your lightsaber. It was awesome! And manning the AT-ST was great fun. No overly complicated or ackward controls to get in your way, and it was powerful without being invincible.

Video games are inherently geeky, Star Wars games even moreso, but they're still fun, accept it!

Or are you just... chicken? *it worked against Marty McFly*

Or pretty darn close to it. I do sense their power.

The accurate colors alone make them put the 2004 editions to shame. Gushers get too caught up in the "clear picture" and forget how dark it is and over saturated. They go on and on about how they "don't mind the changes" without seeing how much willpower it takes to "not mind" instead of just freely enjoying the movies as you can so naturally with the originals. Of course, to those people, they probably have to force themselves not to scream everytime they see a garbage matte or obvious blue screen artifact. But then, it's not as if they can get by a viewing of the 2004 editions and do that. I think that the focus on the changes in the new additions breeds a new kind of viewer... the one who watches the movies looking for flaws. And since they will never be completely eliminated (especially with incompetent people running these DVD releases in handing out impossible schedules), viewers will be like Lucas... always seeing the films as something to be further tweaked, changed, "updated" and "fixed" rather than simply an enjoyable cinematic experience for the story, characters, and action. There will always be one more matte box to fix, one more character inserted, one more background tweaked to show off the latest technology.

It is good in many ways, but it's also very flawed. I won't say Zahn's books were crap, but I do think many put them on a pedestal that is not deserved. Still, some of the worst of the EU makes it look like a masterpiece by comparison. The climate they were created in was very different than the climate today. Back then we knew so little about Star Wars, and we had a desire to "know more" than what was shown in the movies and the few novelisations and things that were already out there. Thus it was uncharted territory and we ate it up, even if in hindsight a lot of it was silly and didn't make much sense, and was ultimately retconned into nothing. That "sense of discovery" at finally having a NEW Star Wars adventure was something we all treasure.

I bought up and read in sequence all three novels in one summer vacation. I greatly enjoyed it. Looking back I realize they weren't that good, but it was the experience I enjoyed most.

I loved the Jedi stuff, but each to his own. It was a great (and hard) game. Yeah, I wanted to be Luke. wink.gif

Don't panic! See you on the other side...
