aside from thousands of dollars spent in the late 70s and early 80s on toys...
this is the first money i have sent in his direction... for a non box office purchase. and i got before he wanted me to have it...
further more his lack of effort on the dvd menu on disc two means i can watch it quicker too...
You sir, are then a wiser man than the rest of us. Unless Lucas finally does release the originals in anamorphic with cleaned up video (but no changes to the content) next year, this is THE set to buy.
But I wouldn't want to get the "ultimate set" anyway, if it's as rumored, with having to buy the prequels again, altered of course and with further alterations to the rest of the movies (and really no guarentee that the "original originals" will be included, I think that's just wishful thinking, we probably won't see them again until BluRay/HD-DVD).
Btw, ChefElf, I think you owe us a review of the new DVDs, or rather the original originals, as in that set.
It's about time we had some "Old School" Gushing for once, and nobody does it like you do.
There, now who said a little brown nosing never got you anywhere?
Don't be like Lucas and deny us the satisfaction!
Can you guys tell me about the sound changes?
Did the use the original lines or the altered lines from the THX Enhanced "Faces" set of 1992-1995? (that 1993 in there confuses me)

First off, the packaging is rubbish but we knew that already. The extras don't even rate a mention (a preview for a video game?). Having the words "Bonus Disc" written on the discs with the actual original movies is outright offensive as Lucasfilm must know that the original movies are what we all paid to see. And just overall, I got the impression that these DVDs were put together with the absolute bare minimum of effort.
However, after putting the Original Trilogy Discs into my pre-prepared DVD cases with the cool covers I made, I put in "Star Wars" and had a look. I was impressed. It looks great. Maybe it doesn't look as great as it would if somebody had bothered to do some restoration work but I'm really happy with it.
And it's great to see Han shoot first again. It's wonderful. Now, I'm looking forward to watching these wonderful movies again and again for years to come. And with time, I'll hopefully forget all about the awful prequels and the annoying changes to the orginal movies that reminded me of them.
Be happy folks. We've finally got the original movies preserved on DVD.

yeah, i'll get to work on some covers soon myself.
i like how they used the pose photos on the covers so that their hair doesn't match. (esp han on ANH)

I don't know that a review of the orginal, untouched movies is really necessary but I'm sure I'll have plenty of complaints about the packaging. The whole thing seems like it was just done as an afterthought. The cover art is really terrible. I just don't know if I've got a review in me of these DVDs.

And that's the most tragic thing about it - because that was the one thing they put any effort into doing, searching through the archives to make their silly little photo montage. I mean, if you've got posters as good as the ones that were made when these movies first came out, why wouldn't you use what you've got? Plus, the whole photo-montage thing looks like the work of an amateur playing with Photoshop. Hell, I could do a better job of it than they did.
It's a shame I can't share my custom covers with you all. I think you'd like them. But they're too big to upload on Imageshack. However, I can tell what you need to do to make your own.
They need to be 3240 X 2175 pixels and set at 300 X 300 resolution. This should make them print at the correct size in theory - but you may have to get the scissors and do some trimming after you print them.
As for a movie review, KurganX, I can give one right now. I just watched Star Wars this evening and it was fantastic... just how I remember it when I was a kid. And that's how I felt - like a kid again. The picture quality is great for the most part. Occasionally, you see a few frames with a bit of grit and other imperfections but nothing that will detract from the enjoyment of the movie.
And they certainly got it right with "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..." because it's been a very long time since I last really saw this movie.
Watch and enjoy everyone. The magic is back.
And... G'day Barend.

As far as reviews are concerned, yeah I guess there isn't much more to say about the original movies. CE has already covered the 2004 editions in depth. I guess I was thinking more of a follow up, but whatever, it's your site in the end.
I'm most interested in some people showing screenshots of the lightsabers and how bad they look in the 2004 edition compared to the old.
But chances are, nobody will do that until it's too late and everyone who was going to buy this has done so, in the 79 days left of its "Limited" run.

Heh, not only is LaserDisc better quality than VHS, but those tapes must be pretty worn down by now.

With the covers, I've emailed mine to KurganX. Maybe he might be able to do something with them.
Also, Yukai Ondori mentioned something else that I'd forgotten - the sound. It's great. I don't know why everyone was so worried. In fact, it's much much better than the sound on the 2004 DVDs. Dialogue, music and sound effects are all really well balanced this time around - even better than I remembered it. (Actually, the sound is one of the most annoying things about the 2004 versions)
Barend, regarding the marathon, you only need 4 hours and 20 minutes - 4 hours for 'Star Wars' and 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 20 minutes for the space battle and the lightsabre duel from 'Return of the Jedi'. I have to say that the DVD format is really quite useful when it comes to that film. Jabba - skip. Ewoks - skip. Slapstick silliness and poor dialogue - skip.
Also, Barend, you made a great point earlier about the menus. The fact that no effort was spent on them this time comes as a blessing. You just put the movie in and it's ready to play. You don't even get that stupid anti-piracy commercial (almost all new DVDs in Australia have it).
And... G'day Sime Sublime.
