Ok, soo, recently I've been replaying the orignal NES Final Fantasy (thanks in part to this fellow's lovely site), & it reminded me of playing many old 'pre-full video story-segments that take longer than an entire boss battle*' roleplaying videogames, where the extent of character depth was "this is SPEN, and he's a RANGER!"

*: but that's another rant

& in being so reminded, I remember how I used to make up relationships between these cypher-characters, like "SPEN and STEM are a couple! FIRE is the grizzled old wizard and too old for such shenanigans! SCAR is, uh...the barbarian guy...I donno". Because you had to imagine any character-development or intregue on your own!

Also, there's something kinda cutesy about roleplaying game battles--life-&-death swordblow & fireball tossing is represented by these numbers, & you almost never get taken out in one swipe. That way you get all kinds of opportunities for semi-dramatic moments:

"A towering TROLL raises his vile 8 brown pixels (which, we are to imagine, is a dangerous CLUB) over an injured SPEN's head...SCAR fumbles for an arrow but all seems lost, until STEM casts HEAL, and 19 hitpoints flows back into SPEN's body! The day is saved!"

So, anyway. Perhaps I failed my saving throw against Girlyness; but did anyone else imagine bits of these little yarns to add another dimension to their level building/stat minmaxing/spell buying/gold hording? I bet they did!

the late 1980's and 1990's yielded some truly awesome RPG's. The Super Nintendo comes to mind when thinking of a console known for great RPG's in the golden age of gaming. XBOX & PSONE/PS2 are awesome as well. It seems Nintendo has lost its touch in getting great RPGS for its gamecube & N64. I know there was some bitterness between Nintendo and Squaresoft that attributed to much of that. When it comes to excellent RPGs,.storylines prevail over graphics, although graphics do add much depth and charm to it as well.

Hmmm, interesting. I know the Legend of Zelda wasn't a cliche RPG, but it was the only thing that I would play. When I think back on those games, graphics didn't matter to me at all because my imagination was filling in all the detailed pieces. When Zelda came out for the 64 then the 'Cube, it just wasn't the same. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past will always be with me. From the in game music, storylines, all the way down to the art in the game manual.

When I was 18, I slowly got into Pokemon. First RPG I ever played through and beat, but I loved hacking the Red and Blue versions more than anything. Playing with modified and rare characters was always fun when chalenging friends.

Now, the only RPG that I have given (too) much time to is KOTOR!!! The only other series of games that I have played this much would be out of Way of the Samurai 1 & 2 for the PS2. They need to find a way to combine elements from Way of the Samurai and make an even more awesome Star Wars Action/RPG, ...if that's even possible.

I admit that I have also made up storylines for developless characters.

that's what i'm talkin' bout.

my new Final Fantasy game is a blackbelt named Dar, a black mage called Pnky ("Pinky" or "Punky"? He is a dark wizard of MYSTERY!), & two red mages named Podo & kODO (I think they're like one of those couples that look identical).

But of course, as they Level Up, differences inevitably evolve. For example, currently Podo has 78 HP, while kODO has 1 point more of AGL & 75 HP!

I used to stare at the Windows screensaver with all the stars and pretend I was captain of the enterprise.

I used to get drunk and stare at the screensaver with the flying toasters, back in the day.

I own FF1 for the NES! But the battery-backed memory is dead, so I can't play it. I have a true backup copy, and I've played the fantastic remake on the GBA title Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls. I highly recommend old school types check it out, and new schoolers too.
