I got this idea from TheForce.net

It makes me kind of sick that there are so many die-hard gushers. There were a few bashers, though, which is always nice. These days I'm neither a gusher or basher, but lean slightly toward basher. The PT is the PT. You have to like it to some extent.

So...

What do you call this movie?

"Star Wars"

or Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope (ANH, IV, etc.)

or "Original Star Wars"

I use the latter, as of late. I get tired of referring to it as ANH. That's not really what it is; that's an addition. "A New Hope" was meant to be an in-movie extension of the actual title: Star Wars. But it was never meant to be referred to as such. Not originally, anyway.

I refer to it as "A New Hope" simply to avoid confusing it with the other movies. I honestly don't care that it was initially called "Star Wars".

I usually call it "original Star Wars." It has nothing to do with what it was originally called or somesuch semantics...I grew up with that movie being Star Wars for two decades and I'll be damned if I'm gonna change.

I have always referred to that movie as "Star Wars" in conversation, to reference it directly I just use the acronym "ANH." If I have to get specific with someone in conversation I'll say "A New Hope" or "Episode 4" but always tend to simply say "Star Wars" wink.gif

In general to avoid confusion I'll call it "original Star Wars" unless I'm talking in a forum then I'll usually say "ANH."

The general public who aren't quite so obsessed are a little confused though.

I do remember some incidents though that were a bit interesting:

- A friend of a friend borrowed my video movie guide (Leonard Maltin's from a few years back) and said he was a bit upset that Star Wars wasn't listed. I pointed out to him that it was, and couldn't understand what was going on (was he incapable of looking up something in an alphabetical listing in english?). Then I later realized that he must have been looking up in the "A's" for "A New Hope" rather than simply "Star Wars" (in the S's...). It would have been even worse had he been looking up "E's" (Episode IV... though in that case he would have found none of the Star Wars movies and realized his mistake).

-Another time was when a tech guy (about my age I thought) was over fixing my cable modem (stupid thing, argh) and we got to talking about Star Wars (he noticed my Jedi Academy jewel case next to my PC). He asked me if I was a "true fan" and I chuckled and said yeah pretty much, and then he asked me a trivia question "What color was Luke's lightsaber in Episode 6?"

Without hesitation I said "green."

Then he smiled and said it was actually "trick question" that "there is no episode 6." I looked a bit puzzled and waited for him to explain, and he said "You see, there was Episode 1, 2, and three, and then 'Episode 1: The Beginning'..."

At that point I just shook my head. wink.gif

-Another time I think I remembered reading some online article or maybe it was an opinion piece, it was something fan related (I don't subscribe to Insider or anything like that and this was long before blogs), and somebody asked some question and the answer was clearly about Empire Strikes Back, but the question was phrased "In Star Wars..." (basically they were lumping the entire trilogy under the name "Star Wars").

I think to most people when you say "Star Wars," if they are in their 20's or older, they think you mean the original trilogy (whether the special edition or whatever). If they are younger than that, they might think you mean the entire series.

If they are an extreme nerd/geek/fan they think you also include the Expanded Universe. wink.gif

And if they are a true purist, they know you mean only the first movie, as it was shown in theaters prior to 1981!
