So Bully's coming out soon and there are finally glimmers of what it's about. Naturally, politicians like archetypal video game hater Jack Thomson decried it from the start as a "Columbine simulator," despite no information on what it was about being released. As boring and repetative as "GTA in a school" would be* this new idea sounds even worse. Apparently, the game is actually about going to school. When you break the rules, you're forced to do chores to repent, and can dodge punishment with a quick apology. Is it just me, or does this sound like a mind-numbing excursion into the trugery of endless minigames?

"Standing up to and even fist-fighting bullies to stop them from tormenting nerds and other students is encouraged. Giving a smaller child a noogie or other gentle razzing is allowed, though not encouraged. Hitting a smaller child, a girl of any age or an adult is strictly forbidden. You can try it, but you will not get away with it — the dramatic, ton-of-bricks response from school security, complete with purposely boring punishments, is meant to be a strong disincentive.

In short: old-time adolescent high jinks like setting off a stink bomb are O.K.; serious delinquency and criminality are not. The player is certainly not meant to be a total goody two-shoes — that would make a seriously boring game — but he is a cutup, a scamp rather than a seriously bad kid. Unlike real-life boarding schools, you can’t get drunk or use drugs. If a player skips class, the prefects come looking. If a player sleeps too little, you’re the character begins to feel sluggish and unresponsive."

If that wasn't yawn-worthy, get ready for this: It's being laughably released exclusively on the old, archaic PS2, so you can expect the same sub-par graphics and performance of previous Rockstar games due to hardware limitations. Maybe we'll all luck out and it'll be a refreshing change of pace, but I can't help but think that this game is going to sell mostly on the label and the false taboo hype it's received from the media, and, of course, the fact that the PS2 is so popular.

Thoughts? Rants? What do you guys (and the few gals) here think?

*After all, what was Vice City but GTA3 stealing from Scarface with a few UI foibles fixed, and what was San Andreas but Vice City with a black guy, kneeling, and Samuel L. Motherfucking Jackson? (Profanity included because Rockstar seemed very enthusiastic at saying "fuck" a lot in SA. Not that I care about profanity in games or movies, but it seemed to be one of the hype points. "Look at us! We made a game with swears!") Bleh. Enough of my ranting! To be fair, I did muchly enjoy crusing around the cities in a stolen sports-car, moped, and the occasional gunfight due to a double-cross.

Edit: I fail at asterisks.

In Manhunt I cannot jump. I need to jump. If I can see the game first then I'll consider.
As it is about School (off putting) shouldn't they make it biased for an interesting play?

reality....videogames?

what's the incentive to play this as opposed to, say, actually going to school where you can actually get away with stuff?

So it'll be exclusively released on the good ol' good for nothin' PS2, eh? Brilliant, I consider that problem solved then. Now if you'll please excuse me, I've got a Linux system to tend to.

I wonder how in-depth the plot will be. In my opinion, the main character should have an abusive father who either ignores him, beats him, or get's drunk and cornholes his son with beer bottles. Then, when you pick on one kid too much, he comes to school the next day in a trench coat and well, you know the rest.

Ooh, and then when you finally drop out of the school, you get a job at a bowling alley and spend the rest of your days living off welfare checks and a steady diet of hot wings. You blow most of your money on alcohol and painkillers, though. Eventually, you get to knock up some fugly broad and run off to New Mexico, in an attempt to evade child support. Finally, in a desperate attempt to improve your life, you join the Army and die horribly.

What fun!

To be honest, I don't think I've heard of anything good from Rockstar since GTA2. I wasn't even going to bother looking at this.

You didn't like GTA3? It was like a major inspiration in gaming. It practically set the stage for the "freeform" game.

I didn't like the themes. It was too realistic and depressing. Playing GTA and GTA2 were great fun, as it was all so fake. But three got a bit too much true to life, and I found the whole criminal culture presented to be depressing.

Damn! So if the bitch gets out of line, you cant smack her in her place!? THATS lame.

But seriuosly, a game were your a bully is just so ironic becouse most people play games to forget or escape reality and that reality usualy involves them being beaten up by... guess what... a BULLY!

except that kids who get bullied in school, spend all their time in world of warcraft leveling until they hit 60 then sneak around and wait till another player 20 levels or more lower is on their last leg fighting a monster before ganking them.

in a way, it makes me feel good to know those little shits are getting beaten up.

teachers don't care about bullying.

there's only one way to deal with a bully. and that's the way coffe in the Abyss did as a kid (if you read the book).

wait in the stair well of the appartment building in which he lives, a few stairs up... then while he's getting out his keys, smash his head in with a cinderblock so that he's too busy learning to talk again to hassle anyone.

there's at least 10 neards in evry school... all they gotsta do is stick together...

a video game about bullying won't encourage the AGE OLD FUCKING ALREADY EXISTING ART of it. if anything it will give victims a unique insight into the world of ganking and better understanding into the psyche of the bully thus developing empathy for them and a platform through which a better understanding can be gained.

or they can take a gun to school and shoot up all the jocks, say what you like but i bet there's no bullies at colombine anymore.

It sounds like someone had a hard time doing quests in STV. tongue.gif

I quit playing WoW before I could become an anti-ganker. I'm better off for it.

There was this one article that made me think twice about this game.

Apparantly it's suppose to... shed light on the situation at school. Hopefully bring press coverage to how bad it is to be bullied. Education, blah blah and all that noise.

Still think it's stupid but it's still a redeeming quality.

Good gravy. And that's my response after watching it with no sound.

Edit: I originally said "hearing", not "watching" in this post, which makes no freakin' sense.
