A sequel pretty much requires people to see the previous film(s) for full enjoyment. Bottom line, a lot of people are going to see that as "work"; this is a very lazy society, and people want things to come easy for them

There was these two films. Before Sunset and Before Sunrise.

Before Sunrise came out in 1995. Before Sunset came out in 2004. Not many people remember Sunrise. I never even heard of it before working at the vid store. Also, it's not all that obvious that Sunset is the Sequel to Sunrise. The first film was not a smash hit and the 9 year spread did not help.

There was a tiny write up in ether the Georgia Straight or some other local free magazine about the films, 1 year after the sequel was made and already on our shelves.

That one article made both films the most popular oldies rental for like a month and a half. The films were on constant reserve.

I had a customers come in and ask on numerous occasions questions like "there is this film and the 2nd film, I don't know which came first, something sunset, can you find that for me?" People Searched the store for this hard to find film, burried in our old drama section.

My boss finally brought them to the front and ordered a second copy of each film to make the customers lives easier.

So people are not lazy. If something appeals to them, be it a small write up in a free mag or maybe a 10 million dollar advertising campaign, I believe that either way they will go attempt to find the original.

People will not only rent originals prior to viewing the sequel in theatre, but they will also rent those low budget film versions that have a higher budget version in cinema.

When Troy came out, with Brad Pitt and Eric Bana, our store also got this TV quality film called "the legend of troy" or something. We stocked it at the same time that Troy was being aired in local theatres. That film faired as well as other new releases.

The rush to the original, as my boss called it, is what keeps the oldies section alive. Our video store stayed in business based soley on New release rentals. Infact we practically gave our oldies away with nutty deals. One new relase was like twice the cost of a single oldie and they still sold better.

No, I agree with that. People disagree with me all the time. Ask Jen all about that; she is my arch-nemesis. I don't assume when she disagree that she doesn't understand me. I just figure she's wrong. tongue.gif

When someone repeatedly says "I know what you mean," and then restates what they think you're saying but they get all the details wrong, then I say they don't know what I'm talking about. As for the argumnent, I moved on ages ago. I have made my case, and you've just restated your misunderstanding of it over and over again. I have stats from Jordan to back me up and you say they don't mean anything because you don't understand what he's talking about either. I just think it's awesome that you can't simply say "I know what you mean," then actually summarize what I'm saying, and then say that you dfisagree with THAT, and WHY, with whatever facts you have to back up your point of view. Because what you're disagreeing with is something else altogether. What's you're disagreeing with is something no one here has said, and yeah, if anyone had said it, you're probably right to disagree with it, because it would have been a stupid thing to say.

At least if you knew what you were disagreeing with, and I knew that you knew, then I could shake my head and say "well, he's wrong." But I'm getting pretty close to assuming that can't happen.

In other news: again, another good post with relevant information from Jordan. Strong stuff there.
