That simile is retarded. FPS is a genre. Piracy is a theme. And the reason why I haven't done a pirate game is because Monkey Island ensures that every fucking amateur designer from here to Azerbaijan makes or thinks about making a pirate-themed adventure game. Much as I'd love to make life easier for myself by attempting to leech off someone else's idea I have this troublesome thing called 'integrity' that foils the caper.
As I walked through the valley of the shadow of death, I realised that it could do with a lick of paint.

you look too much into my simile to understand what I mean, and LucasArts made alot of games if you were afraid to do something and look foolish making a pirate game wouldnt be one simply because you wouldnt take the story, characters ect for your game. if this sounds jumbled i lost my train of thought half way through and tried to compensate

Why did you put the full stop and comma in the third line? I mean, you didn't bother with any punctuation at all throughout the entire...paragraph...thing...(excluding that one lonely comma at the top). Please, if you expect people to take the time to actually read what you have to say, at least take the time to make it legible.

If this sounds jumbled i lost my train of thought half way through and tried to compensate.

Yahtzee's said his piece, keep trying to persuade him otherwise and not only will you annoy the crap out of him, but you'll also ensure he hates you from here on.

As much as I love the genre, or anything related to the ocean, for that matter, the pirate theme is sort of a bad idea, since everyone will always say, "Well, it's good, but it's not Monkey Island."

I think an underwater adventure would be cool, like in a futuristic bio-sphere built at the bottom of the ocean.

Ooooh... If I ever finish mining that one thread in the news desk I might consider that sentency thing up there as sig material.

And before anyone suggests a game about land piracy let me just point out the existence of GTA. And before anyone suggests sky piracy, might I remind you that about ninety percent of any sky piracy game would consist of the following:

"You fail and fall thousands of feet to your doom"

"Well fawk."

I dunno - a piratey game is probably out of bounds because Monkey Island is such a classic in the adventure/point 'n click field.

Also, there have been a lot of attempts to make piratey adventure games with AGS and I can't name one that was considered unanimously great. I don't think that pirate theme would still offer so much depth in characters after Monkey Island, mostly because of the pirate stereotype itself. Most of the jokes have been blown in that series, and they just wouldn't be funny in a new pirate game.
