I decided to add this in the ROTS subcatagory because technically they were born at the end of the events of ROTS and this forum is visited more than the others, so more may contribute. Basically, the whole presentation of Luke and Leia as twin siblings is unnecessary to the OT and PT by extension. Luke could have confronted an evil twin male sibling aboard Death Star II and triumphed at the end after a long fight because the good side of the Force would overcome the bad, maybe even extend the analogyfrom the Cave to show Luke sees a face that's scarred but resembles his own under the Vader mask, a graphic representation to avoid fear and hatred. Having Leia as his sister adds nothing to the story, and the fact Vader is later revealed to be his father adds very little other than a few dramatic moments in ESB and three in ROTJ, namely the confrontation on Endor, the lightsaber battle toward the end that leads to Vader's downfall, and the unmasking scene.

I think its further evidenced in the fact GL used the same baby to double for both twins, really setting in stone how much of a throw away flimsey idea the whole inclusion of the family bond was to the overall storyline.

Lucas' quota for good twists were reached in ESB, when the great warrior Yoda turned out to be a little green creature and Vader turned out to be Luke's dad.

As for bad twists, the ROTJ and PT were full of them! I.e. Jabba being a fat slimy turd, Vader being from Tatooine, and the prophecy being a bad thing and not a good thing.
It seems like everyone is over the nitpicking. Too bad.

Right, right, and if you want to have a twist like that you really need to have some form of foreshadowing in the previous movies, like Luke sensing that he had a brother or sensing 'the other'... oh wait, that didn't even happen with Leia. smile.gif

All of the twist isn't really a big problem, its just the simple fact that
they are all structured in a terrible manner. Star Wars could have actually
been a flawless masterpiece, but its riddled with so many inconsitencies and
plot-holes that it takes away from it, which is why Lucas shouldn't make up things
as he goes along because all kinds of inconsistencies can pop up especially when
a film goes against many elements already established from the previous films.

Everything should already be established in writting, THEN onverted to film and that
includes any plot twist.

The whole bit with Luke and Leia being twins felt tacked on at the last moment in RotJ anyway. As someone said, GL has a whole galaxy, billions, if not trillions of people who could have been involved, and yet, he used a really small pool of characters to draw upon, all of whom had connections of some sort or another.

Why shouldn't Leia have been the natural child of Bail Organa? Why didn't GL have Luke's actual twin sister, if he REALLY felt Luke had to have a sister, be someone else entirely that Luke had to go find? Maybe she could have been on Naboo, being raised by Padme's family, who did not know of Luke's existence? Or have it be someone no one in the audience would have suspected? Unfortunately, since Leia was the only female character that was not just set dressing, what other conclusion should Luke or the audience have drawn? wacko.gif

Obi Wan said clearly as Luke was taking off from Dagobah - "That boy was our last hope."
Yoda contradicted him almost instantly with - "No. There is another."

That suggests to me, and I really think GL should have sat down and watched his own bloody movie, that Obi Wan did not know who the other was, or he would have said something more along the lines of, "I guess I had better make sure Leia is ready to confront Vader and Palpatine, since Luke is running off half cocked to play hero."

Too many opportunities were squandered in RotJ. A friend of mine claims to have read "Journal of the Whills" supposedly a book GL published, which was supposed to have led to 9 SW movies all total. My friend claims that Luke and Leia were twins all along, and that RotJ was supposed to be Revenge of the Jedi, because Luke killed Vader and Palpatine out of anger/vengeful motives, took the identity of Darth Vader himself, and became the new Emperor, Darth Vader. Leia was then contacted by Yoda, who did not die, and underwent Jedi training. Ultimately, Leia's love called Luke back from the dark side, and he became Luke again.

Of course, take the above with a grain of salt, because my friend is really full of shit at times. wink.gif

Lucas read it in the Starlog letters to the editor feature. It was a fan suggestion, and a lame one at that.

Yeah I dont like the Luke and Leia twins stuff anymore either. According to Gary Kurtz, whom I quote frequently when it comes to the "original" story line, Luke's sister was from another galaxy or universe all together and she meets up with him in the 7th or 8th movie. Also, the Emperor doesnt come into the picture as a main character until the last movie and he lives in a cave, which I think is stupid. But any way its still sounds better than ROTJ.
It seems like everyone is over the nitpicking. Too bad.

Lame is entirely correct, Despondent. And as mentioned in the last line of my previous post, the friend who told me all about that book is notoriously full of shit at times. I asked to see the book, and he had conveniently "lost" it. rolleyes.gif

I hope that fan is ashamed of him/herself. Look what they've done. They've started the basher culture now. smile.gif

That's just stunning the lack of Lucas' ability to disseminate between a good idea and a bad idea. It's absolutely ridiculous that he could not reject this idea. "Thanks kid, it's a cute idea, but I have other plans."

But of course, we had two things going against the films here. First, Lucas wanted to end the series with ROTJ, and secondly, he's such a control freak that he just couldn't possibly allow anyone else to take control and make movies for him.

That fan letter is posted somewhere on the "countdown calendar" thread. The summer Fangoria ran an 11-page item on the open ended threads of TESB (1980 of course).
