It seems like every decade or so there's a target minority in America who is relentlessly oppressed and infringed upon until they rise up and overcome adversity. Guess what, America? I think I've found our latest target. Not gays. Not Mexicans. Not even Muslims.

I'm talking about smokers.

Now, we all know that smoking will fry your lungs, destroy your life, burn your house down, and then kill you. We all know that a single cigarette contains more chemicals than a BK Value Meal. And we all know that the tobacco compaines are evil demons from hell that have been unleashed upon the earth to profit from an addictive habit.

How do we respond to this? We infringe upon the rights of the poor, innocent victims. The smokers. What exactly have they done to us? Ok, maybe it's annoying when they sit near you at a restaurant, but almost all restaurants these days divide smokers from non-smokers anyway. (Separate but equal facilities?)

You can't smoke at the beach. You can't smoke at the diner. You can't smoke at McDonalds! I would think that a place like McDonalds wouldn't be bothered by health risks, wouldn't you? And in California, you can't even light one up in a bar. At a bar, it's ok for people to impair their judgement, kill their brain cells, slowly destroy their livers, and make complete asses of themselves, but smoking is strictly prohibited.

Personally, I am not a smoker, and never will be, but I still don't turn into a complete pussy the second I catch a whiff of tobacco smoke. People, second-hand smoke is not as bad as the Surgeon General says it is. I'm sorry for being so brutal about this, but if someone dies from second-hand smoke, then they were not very bright. If someone is smoking near you, and you don't like it, leave. It's that simple. Nobody's twisting your arm to stay there and inhale the smoke of others.

(My apologies go out to anyone whose arm was twisted by someone who wanted them to inhale second-hand smoke.)

Now, don't think I'm siding with the tobacco companies here. I think it's wrong to profit from people's addictions, but you have to give smokers a little bit of credit here. They're all not a bunch of mindless automatons at the mercy of Marlboro Inc. They made the decision to start smoking, and that's a decision that they have to live with, unless they decide to quit. They knew that smoking is bad for their health, but they did it anyway. Nobody shoved cigarettes down their throats. So stop treating them like children and let them smoke as they please. Quit trying to help other people with their problems and work on fixing your own.

I do think the no smoking in bars thing is a bit ridiculous. However, other public buildings, even McDonalds (hey, there's children there!), it's great. Because sometimes you really can't leave. There may not be anywhere else to go. Or you are there for a purpose and can't leave until that purpose has been carried out. Smokers are the ones that chose to smoke, so if they're a little inconvenienced to go outside to do it, okay. It's not fair for the other people who did not make any such decisions to have to be inconvenienced for someone else's actions.

How about when they put secret ingredients in such as rocket fuel?

Some of the diseases associated with smoking were found to come from the additional materials put in the cigarette. I heard the Indians use to smoke but what materials did they use?

On reminder that could be like saying, burgers are very unhealthy for you, it is full of fat and can cause diseases, be warned when most of the companies that package the burgers add unhealthy ingredients to them. Some people could believe this if it was not possible for them to make burgers at the time.

Is it really that annoying to smell smoke? In reality, it's not even bothersome unless someone blows it directly into your face.

I don't mind the smell of smoke from wood but I am concerned if it is about smelling rocket fuel.

In some cases, smoke can trigger serious asthma attacks. In others, it really is just annoying.
In answer to your question, yes, it really is that bad. Automobile exhaust annoys me just as much, but at least I can do something about one of them.

dude, that's not eve the surface down this way...

in sydney the law limmits each bar/pup/hotel to one smoking section only... so of course, the evil bastards all chose the pokies...

so it's like 'you can smoke in here, but only if you take up gambling as well.'

And that's only the first step. It wont be long before the smoking band is right throughout the pub. Mind you, as a non-smoker I've certaily noticed the difference. I am now able to go to a pub and not end up with my clothes reeking and my eyes stinging when I leave.

I certainly haven't gone out of my way to make things difficult for people that smoke (some of my very good friends are smokers) but I'm sure as hell not going to be unhappy about these particular changes.

It really is that bad to be in the smoke. Almost every nonsmoker will agree. It's not exactly the smell. It gets in your eyes and burns and makes them water, it makes your throat and nose feel all funny, and can even make your skin feel weird. And like Mirithorn said, it can trigger asthma attacks. Also, some people are just plain allergic. And the smokers are inhaling the smoke through a filter, where all the second-hand smoke coming from the lit end of the cig is not filtered, making it worse for those around.

except that the smokers are infact inhaling second smoke aswell...

second hand smoke is bad, but its not worse... for the record the filter is the worst part of the cigarette.

it blocks out one thing and dishes out another...

Well, I rarely see a smoker position themselves so that the second-hand smoke wafts into their face. I've smoked before and the smoke coming in from the cig was not uncomfortable like second-hand is. Though whether it's more or less healthy in a non-physically discernable way, I guess I don't really know.

second hand smoke is less noticable to a smoker...

outside, the second hand smoke doesn't really touch the smoker...
i was talking more about smoking environments

Personally, I've never actually heard of anyone getting cancer and dying from second hand smoke, and yet, the anti-smoking 'experts' claim that millions die each year from SHS. Wondering how millions of people could die from SHS, but not ever hearing about a single case, I did some Googling and found an article by a Dave Hittman who decided to challenge anti-smoking 'experts' to name three people who died from second hand smoke.

http://www.davehitt....name_three.html

Now, I'll go ahead and sum up this article so you won't have to read it in it's entirety.

Hittman ended up contacting 8 people, all of them anti-smoking activists.

Out of these 8 people, 4 of them ignored the email completely.

2 of them evaded the question, and when asked again, both actually unable to come up with any names.

Finally, only 2 of the activists had any names.

Jeffery Wigand, star of the Insider, gave out one name; Elizabeth Wiley. Hittman did research and found nothing about this person dying from SHS, declaring it unverified.

The other activist actually had 3 names: Mildred Wiley of Indiana, Burl Butler of Missouri, and Larry Ray Thaxton of Tennessee.

Hittman did more research and this is what he discovered;

Mildred Wiley actually died of pancreatic cancer that spread to her lungs.

Burl Butler's claim was ruled against by a jury.

And nothing was found concerning Larry Ray Thaxton, also declaring his case unverified.

So, in conclusion, not one documented, indisputable name was given.

While it is tough to prove that a specific person got cancer of some sort from second hand smoke, because cancer is not the exclusive privelage of people who smoke, it certainly can do no good for your chances of not getting cancer. Like eating a macrobiotic diet helps you forestall or prevent cancer, so does avoiding cigarette smoke.

Exactly. So they can stop whining about not being able to get their fix, smoke outside, and leave my air alone. They also arrest drunks for disorderly conduct and keep people from blasting stereos at 2am when other people are trying to sleep. Why shouldn't our right to relatively clean air be protected? You don't need to smoke inside, but you have to go to McDonalds if you want McNuggets.

Edit: And smokers aren't being discriminated against, it's the habit of smoking.
