Christians Try To Censor Georgia School's Reading List
Monday, March 22, 2004

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -- Some Christian parents in Georgia want a bevy of books removed from their local schools' reading list.

Three parents with the group Crusaders for Christ told members of the Bartow County Board of Education that several books are too offensive for students to be reading.

The group's leader, the Rev. Dwight Holcomb, told board members, "You're going to answer to God Almighty for your decision."

Among the books the Crusaders for Christ want banned are "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck, "The Martian Chronicles" by Ray Bradbury and "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee.

Ah, keeping stupidity alive! I guess that's what one would expect from such an unfortunately named group.

Crusaders are not bad people. I know some on my campus, however the ones in the article seem a little off the wall.

I read to kill a mocking bird, and I found it to be very good.

Three parents, they hardly represent us all.

Sounds like me that this is nothing but a clever scheme on the part of the board of education to have these books read. If you condemn the books, students will want to read them all the more. Damn those rednecks are smart, must be all the inbreeding.

dear jesus. so if the people dont read anything, or hear anything, offensive until they get to be adults all on their own, how will they handle the situation. and those books are not offensive to anyone, unless your a martian or an idiot.

This is so true. I saw an concert/interview night with Billy Joel where he mentioned that when he first released "Only the Good Die Young" it initially did not do all that well in sales. Then one of the Catholic ministers went on the radio etc and called for the song the be banned. Of course this resulted in the sales going through the roof as all the kids piqued with the idea there was something they were being told not to listen to.

Billy ended the story by saying that he sent a request to this mnister to call for the banning of his next albumn biggrin.gif

I would love to know what their particular grounds were for calling for the banning of these particular books. I've read "Of Mice and Men" and "To Kill A Mockingbird" and these are fantastic books that strangely enough have quite strong positive moral messages. This is a bizzare world we find ourselves in these days.

It's just that the people who run the world (government, religeons, bad parents, and atractive women) don't want a world full of well developed, morally adjusted, intellectual strong types getting about or they'll blow the whole deal for them, and those pathetic whinning asholes will have to do an honest days work for once in their god foresaken lives!!!

so it's really important for them to ban anything and everything that may give the common man: a voice, a spine, or an imagination with which to use what little money comes their way on something usefull.

They also both question our collective values, admit that "the system" is flawed, and subtly promote socialism.

And I think they both contain the word "nigger."

Agreed, and the morality is no less strong for there inclusion. You and I both know that to be able to make up one's mind you need to have a strong understanding of the alternatives. To remove something for this reason (especially when it's agreed that it is subtle) simply negates the opportunity to learn. Hell it starts to take you into the world of fundamentalism - and aint that what the "free" world is fighting against???

As for the use of the word "nigger". It's pretty clear in both books that it is a term that is viewed as disagreeable. It is used by the "bad" characters and the one time I can recall a "good" character (Scout from TKAM) uses the word she is reprimanded by her father. But you already know this you devil's advocate you. biggrin.gif

My point exactly. You have what is by all apearances a fundamentalist government telling the world they are going to war on fundamentalist regimes.

Yes I know it's not exactly on topic, but the topic is where this sort of mind set starts to pick up momentum. In the schools and in the homes of people who are bombarded with all sorts of PC crap that is designed to limit what we can read, view and comment on.
